The 1830 U. S. Census for Virginia, Rockingham County, lists the George Hartman household. The census listed 2 males under five years of age, 2 males ten years old and under fifteen, and one male age thirty and under forty. Females consisted of one age ten and under fifteen, one age thirty and under forty, and one age forty and under fifty. The 1830 census data does not seem to match very well with the dates of birth of the Hartman children given above.

The 1840 U. S. Federal Census for Indiana, Fountain County, Wabash Township, lists a George Martman household (i.e., George Hartman household). The 1840 census lists both the oldest male and female family members as age 40 and under age 50. This would agree with the birth dates for both George Hartman and Elizabeth Royer.

George Hartman died 3 September 1843 in Fountain County, Indiana. He died intestate and Isaac Harshbarger was appointed administrator of the estate.
(44) George Hartman was buried in Campbell Cemetery, Veedersburg, Fountain County, Indiana.(45)
Elizabeth (Royer) Hartman, wife of George Hartman, is listed in the 1850 U.S. Census for Indiana, Wabash Township, Fountain County. Her age is given as 55, born in Virginia. She is listed in the 1860 U. S. Census for Indiana, Wabash Township, Fountain County. Her age is listed as 63 and her place of birth is given as Virginia. Her Post Office is listed as Covington and Coalcreek.

Elizabeth Hartman also appears in the 1870 U. S. Census for Indiana, Wabash Township, Fountain County. Her age is listed as 73 and her state of birth is given as Virginia. No census record was found for Elizabeth in 1880.

Elizabeth Hartman deeded property to her daughter, Zerrelda Marksbury, et. al. on 26 March 1874. The deed was attested by "Abram Royer" and "Susan Royer". This deed effectively took the place of a will. Joshua and Zerelda (Hartman) Marksbury agreed in the deed to care for Elizabeth (Royer) Hartman for the remainder of her life in exchange for 75 acres of land.
(46) Abraham Royer, who attested to the deed from Elizabeth Hartman to Zerrelda Marksbury et. al., must have been the brother of Elizabeth (Royer) Hartman.(47)

Elizabeth (Royer) Hartman died 15 April 1886 and was buried in Campbell Cemetery, Veedersburg, Fountain County, Indiana.

Her father died in 1843, and her mother April 15, 1886, the latter being eighty-eight years old at the time of her death. Of a family of three sons and nine daughters born to Mr. and Mrs. Hartman, two sons and seven daughters are living – Priscilla, Rebecca, Polly, Sally, William, Christina, Andrew J., Isabella and Zerilda. 13) George Hartman died in Fountain County, IN, in September 1843. 14) The guardian's report dated 14 July 1854 lists Andrew J. Hartman, Christina (Hartman) Saltzgaver, and Nancy Caroline (Hartman) Harshbarger. There is no mention of John Alexander.  He is probably the John Alexander (Hartman) living with James and Elizabeth Ann Cassteel in the 1850 census.  Isabel and Zerelda are also not mentioned in the report. The value of the real estate of William Hartman was shown as $200 while there was no real estate value associated with Elijah Harshbarger.

17) William Hartman married Emily Deyo in Warren County, Indiana, on 12 October 1853. Indiana State Library, Genealogy Database, Last Name: HARTMAN, First Name: WILLIAM, Spouse - Last Name: DEYO, Spouse - First Name: EMILY, County: Warren, Date: 10-12-1853. A sister of William Hartman, Rebecca (formerly Reinicker/Rennager) married Nelson Deyo on 4 August 1852 in Vermilion County, Illinois. (Vermilion Co., IL, is adjacent Vermillion Co., IN, and many individuals would go over to Danville, Illinois, Vermilion Co., to get married.)

The Elizabeth Nicholas tombstone at Hicks Cemetery in Perrysville, IN, indicates: "Elizabeth Nicholas wife of William Hartman died Novm 23, 1866, age 26 years, 2 months, 12 days". Photograph of tombstone taken 1 July 2000 by Curtis L. Older.

23) Mary Luella Hartman, daughter of William Hartman and Elizabeth Nicholas Hartman, was born 21 July 1863 in Ford County, Illinois. See Illinois Marriage Records, 1851-1900, Vermilion County, Danville, 1882, Joseph Gouty and Mary L. Hartman, married 28 September 1882. Father's name: Wm. Hartman. Mother's name: Elizabeth Nicholas. Witnesses to the marriage were a Joseph Nicholas and Sarah A. Short.

The Ethel Belle (Fox) Gouty Family Bible in the possession of Curtis Lynn Older states the following on a page headed "Family Register": Luella Hartman Gouty born 1863 – July 21 and Joseph Gouty born 1860 – Jan – 6. Copies of pages from the Ethel Belle Fox Family Bible are in a CD-rom disc entitled Fox's Gap in Maryland, which is at the Frederick County Historical Society, Frederick, Maryland.

25) Mary Luella Hartman was living with her mother's parents in 1870. The 1870 U. S. Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township, lists Nicklas, Wm., age 61, Nicklas, Mahala, age 55. Nicklas, Joseph N. age 22, Hartman, Mary L., age 6, born in Illinois, Hartman, Ezra E. age 3, born in Indiana.

26) In 1870, Elizabeth Hartman, age 73, is listed in the Wabash Township, Fountain Co., Indiana, census.  She is listed as head of household with real estate valued at $1800 and personal property worth $150.  Her youngest daughter, "Serrelda" [sic] is living with her as are her son Andrew J. and his wife, Ellen.  Both Andrew J. and Ellen are listed as born in Ohio. 29) Abraham Royer, who attested to the will from Elizabeth Hartman to Zerrelda Marksbury et. al., must have been the brother of Elizabeth (Royer) Hartman. His tombstone at Covington, Indiana, indicates he was born 14 September 1811 and died 28 June 1893. A death record for Adella C. Haupt indicates her father was Abraham Royer, her father's place of birth was Rockingham Co., VA; she was born 17 March 1853 in Covington, Indiana; her mother was born in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, and her mother's name was Susanna Wertz. See Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths, 1916-1947 for Adella C. Haupt.

30) Campbell Cemetery records, Fountain Co., Indiana: "Hartman, Elizabeth, wife of George Hartman d. 24 April 1886 age 88y 10m". Since she was born 22 Oct 1797, her date of death or age is misstated. (44) Letters of Administration, Fountain County Clerk of Court, Covington, Indiana, page 414 et. al., 18 Sept 1843, Deceased:  George Hartman, Administrator:  Isaac Harshbarger. Probate records list his heirs as Nancy Caroline, Elizabeth Anne (Ann), William, Andrew Jackson, John Alexander, Christina (Christiana), Isabel, and Zerelda Hartman, all minor children.  Priscilla, Mary, Rebecca and Sarah are married.  William Hartman and Elizabeth Anne Hartman were minor heirs "over the age of fourteen years", and chose Thomas Lyons as their guardian.  The Court then appointed Mr. Lyons as guardian for all the minor heirs.  The guardian's report dated 14 July 1854 lists Andrew J. No later report has been found.
