The 1830 U. S. Census for Virginia, Rockingham County, lists the George Hartman household.
(88) The census listed 2 males under five years of age, 2 males ten years old and under fifteen, and one male age thirty and under forty. Females consisted of one age ten and under fifteen, one age thirty and under forty, and one age forty and under fifty. The 1830 census data does not seem to match very well with the dates of birth of the Hartman children given above.

The 1840 U. S. Federal Census for Indiana, Fountain County, Wabash Township, lists a George Martman household (George Hartman household).
(89) The 1840 census lists both the oldest male and female family members as age 40 and under age 50. This would agree with the birth dates for both George Hartman and Elizabeth Royer.

George Hartman died 5 September 1843 in Fountain Co., Indiana.
(90) He was buried in Campbell Cemetery, Veedersburg, Fountain Co., Indiana.(91)

Probate records list the heirs of George Hartman as Nancy Caroline, Elizabeth Anne (Ann), William, Andrew Jackson, John Alexander, Christina (Christiana), Isabel, and Zerelda Hartman, all minor children.  Priscilla, Mary, Rebecca and Sarah are married.  William Hartman and Elizabeth Anne Hartman were minor heirs "over the age of fourteen years", and chose Thomas Lyons as their guardian.
(92) The Court then appointed Mr. Lyons as guardian for all the minor heirs.

Some of the individuals who are mentioned in the George Hartman estate inventory records are: Jonathan Royer, Elijah Harshbarger, Levi Harshbarger, Noah Harshbarger, David Reinecker, Samuel Rinecker, Isaac Harshbarger, Elizabeth Hartman, Joseph Royer, Abram Hershbarger.
(93)

Elizabeth (Royer) Hartman, widow of George Hartman, appears in the 1850 U.S. Census for Indiana, Wabash Township, Fountain Co.
(94) In particular, her age is given as 55 and she is listed as born in Virginia. The Elizabeth Hartman family is listed as Family #522. Family #523 is the David Rineker family and Family #524 is the Isaac Harshbarger family.

William Hartman was living in the Elija and Sarah (Hartman) Harshbarger household at the time of the 1850 Wabash Township, Fountain Co., IN census. William was listed as age 23 and born in Virginia. William was listed as a farmer and apparently owned the land that Elijah Harshbarger, also listed as a farmer, was farming. The value of the real estate of William Hartman was shown as $200 while there was no real estate value associated with Elijah Harshbarger.
(95)

Elizabeth Hartman is listed in the 1860 U. S. Census for Indiana, Wabash, Fountain Co. Her age is listed as 63 and her place of birth is given as Virginia. Her Post Office is listed as Covington and Coalcreek.
(96) Elizabeth Hartman also appears in the 1870 U. S. Census for Indiana, Wabash, Fountain Co.. Her age is listed as 73 and her state of birth is Virginia.(97) No census record was found for Elizabeth in 1880.

Elizabeth Hartman made a deed to her one daughter, Zerrelda Hartman Marksbury, and to Zerrelda's husband, Joshua Marksbury, on the 26th day of March 1874 in which Elizabeth transferred land and received $1,000 and a promise of "long-term care" as consideration. She signed the document with a mark, consistent with census records that indicate she could not read or write. The deed was attested by her brother, Abramham Royer, and his wife, Susan Royer.
(98)

"Zerrelda Marksbury and Joshua Marksbury of Fountain County Indiana in consideration of natural Love and affection and the further consideration of the Sum of One Thousand dollars The receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, and also the further consideration that Said Zerrelda Marksbury & Josline Marksbury Shall Keep maintain Support, do the washing mending baking furnishing Clothing, pay physicians bills and Boarding of Said Elizabeth Hartman the grantor for and during her natural life and pay her funeral expenses after her death."
(See Appendix A for entire deed.)

No census record was found for Elizabeth Hartman or Joshua and Zerrelda Marksbury in 1880. Records of the Campbell Cemetery in Van Buren Twp., Fountain Co., give Elizabeth Hartman's date of death as Apr 24, 1880, at age 88 yrs, 10 mo.
(99) Since she was born in 1797 according to Peaked Mountain Church records, there appears to be an error regarding her age or her date of death. Another source indicates she died 15 April 1886.(100)

14) The guardian's report dated 14 July 1854 lists Andrew J. Hartman, Christina (Hartman) Saltzgaver, and Nancy Caroline (Hartman) Harshbarger. There is no mention of John Alexander.  He is probably the John Alexander (Hartman) living with James and Elizabeth Ann Cassteel on the 1850 census.  Isabel and Zerelda are also not mentioned in the report. Indiana State Library, Genealogy Database, Last Name: HARTMAN, First Name: WILLIAM, Spouse - Last Name: DEYO, Spouse - First Name: EMILY, County: Warren, Date: 10-12-1853. A sister of William Hartman, Rebecca (formerly Reinicker/Rennager) married Nelson Deyo on 4 August 1852 in Vermilion County, Illinois. Elizabeth Nicholas tombstone, Hicks Cemetery, at Perrysville, IN: "Elizabeth Nicholas wife of William Hartman died Novm 23, 1866, age 26 years, 2 months, 12 days". Photograph of tombstone taken 1 July 2000 by Curtis L. Older.

23) Mary Luella Hartman, daughter of William Hartman and Elizabeth Nicholas Hartman, was born 21 July 1863 in Ford County, Illinois. See Illinois Marriage Records, 1851-1900, Vermilion County, Danville, 1882, Joseph Gouty and Mary L. Hartman, married 28 September 1882. Father's name: Wm. Hartman. Mother's name: Elizabeth Nicholas. Copies of pages from the Ethel Belle Fox Family Bible are in a CD-rom disc entitled Fox's Gap in Maryland, which is at the Frederick County Historical Society, Frederick, Maryland.

25) Mary Luella Hartman was living with her mother's parents in 1870. The 1870 U. S. Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township, lists Nicklas, Wm., age 61, Nicklas, Mahala, age 55. Nicklas, Joseph N. age 22, Hartman, Mary L., age 6, born in Illinois, Hartman, Ezra E. age 3, born in Indiana.

29) Abraham Royer, who attested to the will from Elizabeth Hartman to Zerrelda Marksbury et. al., was the brother of Elizabeth Royer Hartman. His tombstone at Covington, Indiana, indicates he was born 14 September 1811 and died 28 June 1893. A death record for Adella C. Haupt indicates her father was Abraham Royer, her father's place of birth was Rockingham Co., VA; she was born 17 March 1853 in Covington, Indiana; her mother was born in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania and her mother's name was Susanna Wertz. See Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths, 1916-1947 for Adella C. Haupt.

30) Campbell Cemetery records, Fountain Co., Indiana: "Hartman, Elizabeth, wife of George Hartman d. Apr. 24, 1880 88y 10m". Since she was born 22 Oct 1797, her date of death or age is misstated.
