Lucy Jane Harmison was born in April 1851 in the state of Indiana.(1) Her parents were Isaiah Harmeson and Melissa Perkins.(2) They probably married about 1848.(3) Isaiah Harmeson was born May 13, 1825, in Belmont County, Ohio, and died December 9, 1887, in Casey, Clark County, Illinois.(4) Melissa Perkins, the mother of Lucy Jane Harmison, was born either December 15, 1829, or January 23, 1830, in Indiana.(5) Melissa (Perkins) Harmeson died June 23, 1891, in Casey, Illinois.(6) Both Isaiah and Melissa Harmeson are buried in the Macedonia Cemetery in Casey, Clark County, Illinois.(7).
Isaiah Harmeson, his wife, Melissa, and their first two children, Enos and Camilla, are listed in the 1850 U. S. Census for Indiana, Madison County, Anderson Township, page 97.(8) According to the 1860 U. S. Census for Illinois, Champaign County, Township 19 N Ranges 11 E and 14 W, enumerated August 20th, Isaiah Harmeson, his wife Melissa, and six children, were living in Champaign County, Illinois. Lucy J. Harmeson, is listed in the 1860 census as age 7 and born in Illinois.(9) At the time of the 1870 U. S. Census for Illinois, Champaign County, Lucy Jane Harmeson is not listed as living in the household of Isaiah and Melissa Harmeson.(10)
Lucy Jane Harmison married Chesterfield Worth.(11) Chesterfield was the son of John Worth and Julia Ann Drysdale.(12) Chesterfield was a descendant of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley, passengers on the ship Mayflower that landed at what became Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620.(13)
A marriage record for Lucy Harmison and Doctor Dillon was found in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois, with a September 8, 1872, marriage date.(14) The first child of Chesterfield and Lucy Worth, Elizabeth A. Worth, probably was born in 1873.(15) Isaphine Worth, a daughter of Chesterfield and Lucy Jane (Harmison) Worth, gave her father's name as "Dock Worth" on her marriage license application in Terre Haute, Indiana.(16)
The U. S. Census for Illinois, 1880, Vermilion County, Oakwood Township, enumerated June 28, lists Lucy Jane Worth, age 27, living in a household with Chesterfield Worth and their two children, Elizabeth A. and Jesse Worth.(17)
Lucy Jane Harmison and Chesterfield Worth were the parents of seven children: Elizabeth Ann, Jesse, Clara Belle, Mellisa (Melessia M.), Margaret, Isaphine, and Ethel Leona Worth.(18) Annie Worth (Elizabeth A. Worth) died at age 18. She was buried at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, Indiana, on September 23, 1891.(19)
Chesterfield Worth apparently died in 1892 at Terre Haute, Indiana, probably sometime after March of that year. The 1892 Terre Haute City Directory lists Lucy Worth as the widow of Chesterfield.(20) Ethel Leona Worth, the youngest child of Chesterfield and Lucy Worth, was born January 8, 1893, in Terre Haute, Indiana.(21) Both the death certificate and the Social Security application form of Ethel Leona (Worth) Older show that her father was Chesterfield Worth and that her mother was Lucy Jane Harmison. No will or estate papers have been found for Chesterfield Worth nor is it known where he is buried.
Lucy Jane Harmison, the only wife of Chesterfield Worth, married for a second time on June 9, 1896, in Terre Haute, Indiana. Lucy married Jesse Lewellen.(22) Jesse was the widower of Elizabeth Worth, a sister of Chesterfield Worth.(23)
Jesse Lewellen and Elizabeth Worth were married in Montgomery County, Indiana, on November 17, 1864.(24) The 1896 Vigo County marriage record for Lucy Jane Harmison Worth proves that Jesse Lewellen was the same man who married Elizabeth A. Worth in 1864 in Montgomery County, Indiana. A number of census records connect various members of the Worth and Lewellen families with Shannandale, Montgomery County, Indiana. Elizabeth (Worth) Lewellen died sometime after March 25, 1888, and before June 1896.(25)
There is no reason to doubt Jesse Lewellen and Lucy Jane (Harmison) Worth knew each other many years before they married in 1896. Chesterfield and Lucy Jane Worth named their first son and first daughter after Jesse and Elizabeth Lewellen.(26)
Lucy Jane (Harmison) (Worth) Lewellen died January 30, 1908, in Terre Haute, Indiana.(27) Because she was impoverished, she was given a county burial at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, Indiana. Her grave has no tombstone.(28)
The following list provides information about the seven children of Chesterfield Worth and Lucy Jane Harmison:
1) Elizabeth Ann Worth was born in 1873 and died at age 18. According to records at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, Indiana, she was buried September 23, 1891. She has no tombstone because she was impoverished and received a county burial. Elizabeth was named after Chesterfield Worth's sister who married Jesse Lewellen in 1864 in Montgomery County, Indiana.(29)
2) Jesse Worth was born in February 1876 in Vermilion County, Illinois. The U. S. Census for Illinois, 1880, Vermilion County, Oakwood Township, lists Jesse in the Chesterfield and Lucy Jane Worth household, as age 4, born in Illinois, father born in Indiana, mother born in Indiana. The U. S. Census for Indiana, 1900, Vigo County, Jesse Lewellen household, lists Jessie Worth as born February 1876, age 24, born in Illinois, father born in Indiana, mother born in Indiana.(30)
The 1894 Terre Haute City Directory lists Jesse Worth as a laborer at the J. Hanley Mfg. Co. with residence at 22 Chesnut. The 1896 Terre Haute City Directory lists Jesse Worth as a tobacco maker at Fred J. Biel and a residence at 426 S. Water.(31)
Jesse Worth married Ida M. Luther in Terre Haute, Indiana, on August 10, 1901.(32) He committed suicide in 1923 and is buried in Terre Haute.(33)
Clara Belle Worth was born May 2, 1878, in Illinois. She married William H. Duke.(34) Clara Belle died January 11, 1967, in Long Beach, California.(35) She was buried in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Long Beach. Aunt Clara helped raise Ethel Leona Worth after the death of Chesterfield.(36)
4) Mellisa (Melessia M.) Worth married Cuby V. Hutchings on April 11, 1898.(37)
5) Margaret Worth died in Norwalk, California. She married first: Weisenberg; second: Riley. Bruce Weisenberg, a son, changed his name to Worth during World War II. Bruce Weisenberg had two daughters. His last known address was in Simi Valley, California.(38)
6) Isaphine Worth was born in January 1885. She first married Herbert Kiefner on July 29, 1903.(39) She later married a man with a last name of Strandtman in Houston, Texas. Helen Strandtman, a daughter, lived in Houston.(40)
7) Ethel Leona Worth was born January 8, 1893, in Terre Haute, Indiana.(41) She married Roy Burton Older, March 1, 1911, in Decatur, Illinois.(42) Roy and Ethel were the parents of Truxton James, Wilma Jane, and Robert Burton Older.(43) Ethel Leona (Worth) Older died at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, Ventura County, California, December 26, 1976, at age 83.(44) She is buried next to her husband at Springhill Cemetery in Danville, Illinois.(45)
The U. S. Census for Indiana, 1900, Vigo County, Harrison Township, enumerated June 12, lists Lucy J. Lewellen as being born in April 1851 in Indiana. Her age is given as 49. The census indicates her father was born in Indiana, her mother was born in Ohio, and that Lucy was the mother of seven children, six of whom were living on June 12, 1900.(46)
Pictures of Lucy Jane (Harmison) Worth and the brothers and sisters of Ethel Leona Worth, excepting Melissa Worth, are in the possession of Curtis Lynn Older. Curtis is a grandson of Ethel L. (Worth) Older. He obtained the pictures from Wilma Jane (Older) Zillman, a daughter of Ethel L. (Worth) Older.

2) Obituary for Ethel Older in the Danville Commercial News dated approximately 27 or 28 December 1976 which lists Chesterfield Worth and Lucy Jane Harmeson Worth as her parents. There may be an obituary in a Ventura, California, newspaper as well.

The marriage record of Isaphine Worth substantiates that Chesterfield Worth also was known as "Doc" [Dock} [Doctor] Worth. This supports the marriage license in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois, that was for Doctor Dillon and Lucy Harmison. Doctor Dillon must have been Chesterfield Worth. Chesterfield Worth could not read or write at the time he married. He signed his marriage record with an “X” on page two. Jesse had previously married Elizabeth Worth, a sister of Chesterfield. Apparently Elizabeth Worth Lewellen died between 1888 and 1896.
