Well Known Guilford Woman Dies at Home.
Funeral service for Miss Laura D. Worth, 76, who died at 5 a.m. Tuesday at her home at Guilford College, after a year of declining health, will be held at 2 p.m. today at the graveside in New Garden cemetery with Rev. Joseph Peele, pastor of Deep River Friends church, and Rev. Russell Branson, pastor of New Garden Meeting house conducting the service.
Miss Worth was a native of Alamance county, the daughter of the late Daniel and Eunice Hendley Worth. During her entire life she was closely associated with the community of Guilford College, Guilford college and the North Carolina Yearaly meeting. Miss Worth, who attended New Garden Boarding school as a child, later studied at Boston Normal School of Gymnastics and returned to Guilford college as its first director of physical education for women. The first gymnasium at the college was built because Miss Worth emphasized the need for it and aroused interest in its construction.
In 1898 she attended Woman's Medical college in Baltimore, Md., and later took nurses training at Presbyterian hospital, Charlotte, becoming one of the first nurses from Guilford county to pass the state board examinations. Miss Worth was the college nurse and matron at Guilford from 1905 until 1928.
As a member of the Society of Friends she served as statistical secretary and custodian of records for many years, being recognized as an authority of North Carolina Quaker genealogy and compiled data for part of the works of William Wade Hinshaw, "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy." Miss Worth was an active member of the North Carolina Society of Mayflower Descendants.
Surviving are a sister, Miss Lina E. Worth, of the home, and two brothers, Percy Worth, of the home, and Archibald Worth, St. Petersburg, Fla.
