Jacob Ricketts was born February 22, 1826, in Dearborn County, Indiana.(1) He was the son of John Ricketts and Mary Goodner.(2) John Ricketts was born February 1, 1787, in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania.(3) John married Mary Goodner, in Fairfield County, Ohio, on 9 January 1817.(4)

John Ricketts died February 23, 1843, in Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana, and is buried at the Ricketts and/or Mitchell Cemetery, Vermillion County, Indiana. His tombstone indicates, "Aged 56 years 22 days". John Ricketts probably settled in Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana, about 1830.

Mary Goodner was the daughter of Jacob Goodner and Ester (or Hester) White. She was born March 20, 1802, in Guilford County, North Carolina. She died September 8, 1866, "aged 64 y, ? m, 12 d" and was buried at the Ricketts and/or Mitchell Cemetery beside her husband.
(6) The 1850 Indiana Federal Census for Vermillion County, Highland Township lists the birthplace of Mary (Goodner) Ricketts as North Carolina. She could not read or write and her age was given as 47.(7) The 1860 Indiana Federal Census for Vermillion County, Highland Township, lists the birthplace of Mary (Goodner) Ricketts as Indiana, her age as 59. She was listed as the head of household and she was literate.(8)

Jacob Ricketts was one of perhaps fourteen children born to John and Mary Ricketts.
(9) Jacob was 5 feet, 10 inches, in 1864 according to his military/pension records.(10)

Jacob first married Nancy Jane Scott on May 18, 1847.(11)

Benjamin James Wilson Ricketts was born December 1850. He married Emma Florence Miller in 1858. He died in 1927 and is buried at Upper Mound Cemetery, Kent Township, Warren County, Indiana.

3.
John Harvey Ricketts was born June 5, 1853, in Vermillion county, Indiana. He married Margaret Persilla Fox. He died October 25, 1921. Both are buried at Hopewell Cemetery, Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana.

4.
Foster W. Ricketts was born in 1856.

Mary J. Ricketts was born in 1859.

6.
David Ricketts was born in June of 1859 or 1860 in Vermillion County, Indiana. He married Mary Josephine Dixon.

Nancy Jane (Scott) Ricketts died about 1860.
(12A) Jacob Ricketts then married Melissa Jane Barnard on March 21, 1861, in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois.(12) They were married by Justice of the Peace A. E. Howe. Melissa J. Barnard was born December 11, 1841, in Vermillion County, Indiana.(13)

Elizabeth Jane Ricketts was born October 18, 1861, in Vermillion County, Indiana. She is a twin of Abraham Lincoln Ricketts. She married Daniel Alexander Fox on April 1, 1880. She died February 27, 1922, in Gessie, Indiana, from a home fire. She was buried at Hopewell Cemetery, Vermillion County, Indiana.

Abraham Lincoln Ricketts was born October 18, 1861, in Vermillion County, Indiana. He died on June 26, 1943 and is buried at Bay Pines National Cemetery in Pinellas County, Florida, Section 8, Row 3, Site 11. His tombstone indicates, “PVT 158 IND INF”. He was in the Spanish American War. He was a twin of Elizabeth Jane Ricketts.

3.
Joseph Ricketts was born in July 1864, in Vermillion County, Indiana. He was married in 1864 to a Nancy E. ___________. Joseph died in 1935 and is buried in the Lower Mound Cemetery, Vermillion County, Indiana.

4.
Nancy Ricketts was born in July 1864, in Vermillion County, Indiana. She married John Henry Dixon. Nancy died on March 6, 1937, and is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Fountain County, Indiana.(15)

5.
Hiram "High" Ricketts was born in 1871 or 1872 in Vermillion County, Indiana. He married Gabrielle Talbert. Hiram died in 1930. He is buried at Lower Mound Cemetery, Vermillion County, Indiana.

6.
Fredrick Ricketts was born April 30, 1874, in Vermillion County, Indiana. He married Myrtle E. Gaskin on March 29, 1899, in Vermillion County, Indiana. He died August 24, 1934.

7.
Daniel Ricketts was born in 1878 in Vermillion County, Indiana. He died in 1922 and is buried at the Lower Mound Cemetery. His name appears on the same tombstone as that of his parents.

Jacob Ricketts (Junior) was born in 1880.

Jacob Ricketts served in Company D, 57th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry from about August 1864 to June 1865.
(16) He was in the Battles of Franklin and Nashville, Tennessee. He was drafted in September 1864, and was discharged on July 5, 1865, at New Orleans, Louisiana. His rank was that of a private. At the time of his entry into the military, he was listed as 5 feet 10 inches, complexion was dark, color of eyes was blue, and color of hair was dark. His occupation was listed as a farmer.(17)

At the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee, Jacob was in a far advanced position with probably 1,000 or more US troops commanded by General Wagner. Jacob and his 57th Indiana unit was commanded by John Q. Lane. Wagner disobeyed orders of General Cox and nearly 700 Union troops were taken prisoner. General Wagner, was kicked out of the army as a result of this fiasco. Jacob's medical records consist of perhaps 100 pages or so, related to a pension claim for illness contracted during the Civil War.(18)

Jacob Ricketts died May 3, 1910, at his home in Foster, Warren County, Indiana.(
19) He was buried in Lower Mound Cemetery west of Covington, Indiana.(20) Melissa J. (Barnard) Ricketts died January 23, 1924 in Foster, Mound Township, Warren County, Indiana, and was buried in Lower Mound Cemetery west of Covington, Indiana.(21)

The 1850 Federal Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township, enumerated October 23, 1850, lists Jacob Ricketts age 24, farmer, born in Indiana, Nancy Ricketts age 24, born in Ohio, William Rickets age 1, born in Indiana, Jesse Barnett, age 43, laborer, born in Virginia, Elizabeth Barnett, age 15, born in Indiana, William Barnett, age 14, born in Indiana, John Barnett age 9, born in Iowa, Eliza Jane Barnett age 7, born in Iowa, and George Little age 8, born in Indiana.

Adams lists Jacob Ricketts, age 34, farmer, born in Indiana, Nancy Ricketts, age 34, born in Ohio, William D. Ricketts, age 12, born in Indiana, Benjamin W. Ricketts, age 9, born in Indiana, John H. Ricketts, age 7, born in Indiana, Foster W. Ricketts, age 4, born in Indiana, and Mary J. Ricketts, age 1, born in Indiana.

Federal Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township, Post Office - Perrysville, enumerated June 24, 1870, lists Jacob Ricketts age 44, farmer, and Melissa Ricketts, age 29. The census lists William D. age 22, Ben W. age 19, John H. age 17, David age 10, Lincoln age 8, Elizabeth age 8, Joseph age 5, and Nancy age 3. The 1870 census record indicates that Elizabeth and Lincoln Ricketts were twins.

Melissa indicates that her only marriage during her lifetime was to Jacob Ricketts whom she married on March 21, 1861, by A. E. Howe, J. P. Melissa also states that Jacob Ricketts previously was married to Nancy Scott, who died about 1858. Melissa indicates that Jacob Ricketts died at his home in Warren County, Indiana, on the 3rd day of May 1910.

The document lists his father as John Ricketts and his mother as Mary Goodner. The informant was Melissa Ricketts, Jacob's wife. His date of birth was given as February 22, 1826 and his occupation was that of a farmer.

11) There may be an Indiana State Board of Health Certificate of Death for Elizabeth Jane Ricketts Fox, date of death February 28, 1922, that lists her parents names. The Vermillion County, Indiana, Board of Health Certificate of Death does not list her parents. It indicates she died February 28, 1922, and was buried at Hopewell Cemetery.

12) There is a Jacob and Melissa Ricketts family photo taken about 1905 to 1910 that shows the seven of the eight children of Jacob and Melissa. Abraham Lincoln and Elizabeth Jane Ricketts are shown in the photo along with Daniel, Frederick, Hiram, Joseph, David, Jake, Abraham Lincoln, and Elizabeth Jane Ricketts. Abraham and Elizabeth were twins. David is shown in the picture but was a son of Jacob and Nancy Scott. Nancy, a daughter of Jacob and Melissa, is absent from the picture.

The Department of the Interior Pension Circular in question number four asks the applicant if they were previously married and the date of death of their previous spouse. Jacob Ricketts answers, "Yes, to Nancy Scott who died in 1850." Jacob probably meant 1860, not 1850.
