John Ricketts was the son of Robert Ricketts Senior and Unknown (NOT Susannah Wilson).(1) It is likely John was born 01 February 1787 since his tombstone indicates he died February 23, 1843 and lived 56 years and 22 days.
John Ricketts married Mary Goodner, probably about the year 1816 or 1817.(2) A sister of John Ricketts was Elizabeth Ricketts. Elizaberth married a man named Garrett Larew. A book discusses Garret Larew and his Ricketts relatives.(3) "Garret Larew, born August 7, 1796 in Pennsylvania; husband of Elizabeth Ricketts, the sister of Robert Ricketts Junior. This Garret Larew was the father of Garret Larew of the Civil War. He and the Ricketts will be discussed in sections F and G of this chapter."
Mary Goodner was born March 20, 1802, in Guilford County, North Carolina.(4) She was the daughter of Jacob Goodner and Hester Witt.(5) A North Carolina marriage bond dated November 25, 1798, between Jacob Goodnor and Ester Wite was recorded in Guilford County, North Carolina.(6) Jacob Goodner, Mary’s father, acquired land in Switzerland County, Indiana, the United States being the Grantor, dated October 25, 1825, for 77 acres, being E 1/2 of SE 1/4 of Section 25, Township 3, R 2.(7)
John Ricketts and Mary Goodner were the parents of Jacob Ricketts as well as other children who will be discussed later. The tombstone of John Ricketts at the Ricketts and/or Mitchell Cemetery, Vermillion County, Indiana gives a date of death as February 23, 1843. Tombstone inscription indicates, "Aged 56 years 22 days".(8) This would indicate a year of birth for John Ricketts of about 1787. The tombstone of Mary Goodner at the Ricketts and/or Mitchell Cemetery, Vermillion County, Indiana gives a date of death as September 8, 1866. The tombstone inscription indicates, "aged 64 y, (?)m, 12 d", so Mary Goodner was born about 1802.(9)
The 1820 and 1830 US Federal Census for Dearborn County, Indiana, list John Ricketts. A John Rickett is listed in the 1830 Vermillion County, Indiana, census. Apparently he was listed in both Dearborn and Vermillion Counties for the same year. The 1840 Federal Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township, Post Office Perrysville, lists John Ricketts.
1850 U. S. Federal Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township, enumerated October 25, 1850, shows: Mary Ricketts, age 47, female, value of real estate $1,390, born in North Carolina. There were seven younger males and females living in the household of which she appears to have been the head.(10)
The 1860 U. S. Federal Census for Indiana indicates Mary Ricketts was born in Indiana.(11) It seems likely that information was given by someone in the household who did not know she was born in North Carolina, since evidence clearly indicates she was born in North Carolina to parents who were married in North Carolina.(12)
John Ricketts of Vermillion County, Indiana, deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a certificate at Danville, Illinois, whereby it appears that full payment was made by John Ricketts for the South West quarter of the South East Quarter of Section Seven in Township Twenty North, of Range Eleven West, in the District of lands subject to sale at Danville, Illinois, containing forty acres, dated March 20, 1837.(13)
Land records in Vermilion County, Illinois, include a number of Goodner transactions including one transaction from a Michael Goodner to John Ricketts on December 8, 1838. Another Vermilion County, Illinois, deed is from Jacob Goodner to an Evert Vanvickle on September 26, 1834.
In Vermillion County, Indiana, a deed dated August 13, 1830, from Aaron Purcell and Moria his wife of Vermillion County, Indiana, to John Ricketts, also of Vermillion County, Indiana, for $425.00 transferred the West Half and the South East Quarter of Section 8 in Township 19 of Range 9 West containing 80 acres. Also the West Half of the South West Quarter of Section 4 in Township 19 North of Range 9 West containing 80 acres. Also 79 acres off of the North End of the East Half of the South West Quarter of Section 8 in Township 19 North of Range 9 West. Also 40 acres off of the South End of the East Half of the North West Quarter of Section 17 North in Township 19 North of Range 9 West. Also 40 acres off of the North End of the East Half of the South East Quarter of Section 5 in Township 19 North of Range 9 West in the Crawfordsville Land District.(14)
John Ricketts and Mary Goodner were the parents of the following children:
i. Susannah Ricketts was born about 1818 in Dearborn County, Indiana. She probably was named after the mother of John Ricketts, Susannah Wilson. She married Thomas J. Mitchell on March 31, 1832, in Vermillion County, Indiana.(15) He was born October 26, 1808, in Vermillion County, Indiana. Thomas and Susannah are buried in the Mitchell Cemetery, Highland Township, Vermillion, Indiana.(16)
ii. Esther Ann Ricketts was born in September 20, 1819, in Dearborn County, Indiana. She probably was named after the mother of Mary Goodner, Hester White. Aaron Betzer married Esther Ann Ricketts February 22, 1838 in Vermillion County, Indiana.(17) He was born October 4, 1815 in Adelphi, Ross, Ohio and died Sept 16, 1889 in Cherokee Kansas. Esther Ann Ricketts was born 20 Sept 1819 in Dearborn, Indiana, and she died February 4, 1917 in Cherokee Kansas. She is buried in Star Cemetery, Cherokee County, Kansas.
iii. Mary Ann Ricketts was born about 1821 in Ohio. She married John Drake on March 31, 1839, in Vermillion County, Indiana. He was born about 1817.(18)

County, Virginia, and died February 3, 1902, in Edmond, Oklahoma. He married Jane Johnson on November 18, 1847, in Lawrence, Ohio.(20)
vi. Jacob Ricketts was born February 22, 1826 in Dearborn County, Indiana.(21) He died May 3, 1910, in Vermillion County, Indiana.(22) Jacob Ricketts had a son by Nancy Scott named Benjamin W(Wilson) Ricketts. Benjamin probably was named after his uncle. Wilson probably came from Susannah Wilson, Jacob’s mother. Jacob Ricketts appears to have had three wives over a period of years.(23)

The Department of the Interior Pension Circular for Jacob Ricketts in question number four asks the applicant if they were previously married and the date of death of their previous spouse. Jacob Ricketts answers, "Yes, to Nancy Scott who died in 1850." Perhaps Jacob meant 1860, not 1850. A pension statement by Margaret Ballah filed on behalf of Melissa J. Barnett(Barnard) indicates Nancy Scott died in 1858. Another marriage record for a Nancy Scott was found in the Vermillion County, Indiana, records which indicates perhaps that Nancy Scott divorced or left Jacob Ricketts by that time. 17.
