Various spellings of the Gouty surname are used in source documents in the Maryland Archives. For purposes of this genealogical research and reporting, the Gouty form of the name will be used except where an actual source document is presented.
There were numerous individuals named John Gouty, Joseph Gouty, and Jacob Gouty connected with the Gouty Genealogy in Dorchester and Caroline counties in Maryland and with Accomack County in Virginia in the 1600s, 1700s, and early 1800s. Please see Appendix A to help identify these various Gouty family members.
The author has found only two Gouty family members with the first name of Jacob. The subject of this presentation is the Jacob Gootee was a son of Joseph Gootee Senior. A second Jacob Gouty was the son of Joseph Gouty Junior. This second Jacob Gouty is referred to in various places as Jacob Gouty Junior.
We will first briefly discuss Jacob Gouty, the son of Joseph Gouty Senior, and then try to clarify information about Jacob Gouty Junior who was the son of Joseph Gouty Junior. Afterwards, we will return to and more fully discuss Jacob Gouty, the son of Joseph Gouty Senior.
Joseph Gootee Senior, planter, made a will dated January 4, 1716, and it was probated March 13, 1716 (Maryland, Dorchester County, Wills 14, 319) See Appendix B for complete version of the will of Joseph Gouty Senior.
The will of Joseph Gouty Senior indicates the following facts:
1. His wife’s name was Ann.
2. His dwelling plantation was called Callais.
3. His dwelling plantation to wife Ann during her widowhood or until death, then to son Jacob Gouty, to be delivered to him at the age of sixteen years, except
4. If Jacob attains age of 16 and Ann is still living, then to Jacob when Ann dies.
5. All of personal estate to wife Ann during her widowhood, but if she remarries, she only receives 1/3 of personal estate, and remainder to Jacob upon attainment of age 16. If Ann is still unmarried when Jacob is 16, then Ann and Jacob divide equally.
6. Son Andrew to receive 200 acres of land originally called Callais commonly known as the “Lower Landing”. If Andrew has no children, then to son Jacob
7. Son John the Elder all that ridge of land called ?Hall? Ridge and all that land that appertains unto me lying on the south west side of the said Ridge. If no issue, then to son Jacob.
8. Daughter Lucy Gowty land called Chance.
9. John Gouty the Younger Burbrook (Boorbrook) and all the land that appertains unto me between said Burbrook and the Blackwater River. If no issue, then to Jacob.
10. Daughters Eliz Shorter, Mary Robinson, Ruth Gowty, Rosannah Gouty, Triphena Gouty, Lucy Gowty and Elenor Gouty each one shilling and no more.
11. Son Joseph Gouty one shilling and no more.

Andrew Gouty, brother of Jacob and son of Joseph Senior, was the father of Jacob Gouty Junior. The will of Andrew Gouty, made 19 January 1774, does not mention a son named Jacob Gouty because Jacob died before his father about 1767.

Jacob Goutee died before 13 March 1767, the date of the final accounting for his estate. (Dorchester County, Balances of Final Distributions, Liber 5, folio 20. Solomon Trego and Rosannah, his wife, are listed as administrators of Jacob Goutee late of Dorchester County deceased. John Goutee and George Cole are listed as sureties. The widow, unnamed, received 1/3 of the balance. The three children of the deceased received the remainder.
Rosannah Goutee was a sister of Jacob Goutee and she married Solomon Trego at some point in time. Solomon and Rosannah were the administrators for Jacob Goutee according to this court record. We assume the John Goutee mentioned in the record as a surety was the son of Jacob Goutee.
John Gowtee was the administrator for Jacob Bramble, deceased, per an account dated 10 June 1760 found at Prerogative Court Accounts, Dorchester County, 1718-1777, SM7, Book 44 Pages 290-292, 1759-1760, SR 13858-1, Roll 56-1, MSA SM7-54. “The account of John Gowtee administrator of all and singular the goods and chattles rights and credits of Jacob Bramble late of the county aforesaid deceased.” Also, “Of money paid by this accountant to the deceased’s brother Jacob Gowtee for funeral expenses as by his account proved and receipt appears . . . 2 0 0.”
“On the 10th day of June Anno Domini 1760 John Gowtee the forgoing accountant made oath on the Holy Evangels of Almighty God that the forgoing account as here stated to the best of his knowledge is just and true which thereupon after due examination is passed by. Sureties are John Harper and Bartholomew Woolford. James Auld D Comry D County Representatives unknown if any – Final Account.”
The above court record indicates that Jacob Goote was “the deceased’s brother”. This leads one to believe that Jacob Gowtee was a “brother-in-law” to Jacob Bramble, i.e., was married to a sister of Jacob Bramble. The sister of Jacob Bramble would be at least the second wife of Jacob Gowtee. The date of their marriage was before 10 June 1760.

(OLD 22 – 126) In a deed recorded 26 November 1767 between Jacob Gootee of Dorchester County Planter and John Gootee of Dorchester County Cooper. All that part of a tract or parcel of land called Gootees Chance lying and being in the county aforesaid beginning at a marked pine standing on the north side of the main road that leads from the Chappel to Jacob Gootees it being the division tree of the said Gootees Chance before sold to the said John Gootee containing five acres of land more and less and also part of a tract or parcel of land called Gootees Defence lying and being in the county aforesaid and on the south side of the aforesaid road containing two acres of land
(OLD 10 – 203) Bill of Sale recorded 14 March 1738, Jacob Gowtee of Dorchester County Planter and my brother Andrew Gowtee, hath due unto him by his fathers will two hundred acres of land part of a tract of land called Callys, but not as yet being divided hath thought proper to divide with my aforesaid brother, beginning at a marked gum standing at the north end of Andrew Gowtees corn field upon a ridge by the marsh side, one hundred and fifty perches to a tract of land called Holts Ridge and to all the land belong to their father Joseph Gowtee.

The John Gowtee who was a witness to this transaction may have been John Gootee the Elder, a son of Joseph Gootee Senior and his first wife, Elizabeth Insley. This John was probably born in the early 1690s and died about May 1748. However, he probably was in Accomack County, Virginia by 1738. He died there in 1748. John Gootee the Younger was probably born about 1714 to 1717 and would perhaps be about 22 years old in 1738. He remained in Dorchester County so he may be the signer of this Bill of Sale.
The most likely witnesses to this document were George Griffith who was the father of Mary Griffith who married Joseph Gootee Junior. Joseph Gootee Junior had a son John Gootee born in 1710. This George Griffith and this John Gootee seem to be the most likely candidates for the witnesses on this land record. See Liber 28, folio 329, 13 July 1750, George Griffith, Dorchester County, Wills, “To daughter Mary Gowtee, daughter Eliza, Sheild, George Gowtee, and John Fram, 1 sh. sterl apiece”.

The aforegoing dep. were taken in the presence of Joseph Gowtee, who mar. decd.'s sister.
There are only five possibilities as to the father of John Gootee who was the father of Pritchett Gootee: Joseph Gootee Junior, Andrew Gootee, Jacob Gootee, John the Elder, and John the Younger. This is due to the fact that all Gootee surname descendants came through Joseph Gootee Senior and these five were the only sons of Joseph Gootee Senior.
Andrew Gootee did not have a child named John Gootee. Andrew was born about 1698 and died about 1774. The will of Andrew Gootee does not mention a John Gootee.
Joseph Gootee Junior was born about 1692 in Dorchester County, Maryland, and died in 1728 in Accomack County, Virginia. He had a son John Gootee who was born in 1710. The will of Joseph Gootee Junior does not mention any children except his daughters Elizabeth and Mary. It does mention his brother John Gootee (presumably the Elder and not the Younger).
John Gootee the Elder probably was born in the early 1690s and died by 31 May 1748 per the administration of his will in court. This John Gootee lived in Accomack County, Virginia, and it would seem reasonable that any children of his would live there as well.
John Gootee the Younger was born about 1714 to 1717 and died by 1764. He apparently was born in Dorchester County and died in Dorchester County. Two land records appear to identify him as they are in the name of John Goutee Jr.: Hazard and Second Chance, both dated 03 July 1761.
Jacob Gootee who was born about 1699 and died in 1779. At the time of Jacob’s death in 1779, the John Gootee who is supposed to be the son of Jacob, would have been about 41 years old if he indeed was born about 1738. It seems very reasonable that a son aged 41 years of age would be the accountant for his father’s estate administration.

The first documented GOOTEE in Maryland was John GOOTEE (Jean GAUTIER), a French citizen who arrived on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in February 1662, sponsored by Antoine LeCompte, a Gentleman and large landowner in Maryland.
John was married to Margaret, whose last name is unknown but believed to be Beeson or Besson. Margaret and a son, Joseph, arrived in Maryland in 1666 and she completed her servitude (indenture) on 6 February 1679. At that time her husband, John, was granted fifty (50) acres of land, which they named "Callais," located between what is now Egypt Road and Little Blackwater River (eventually, "Callais" contained 450 acres). John and Margaret Gottee [sic] and Stephen Beeson (Ettiene Beeson were naturalized on 19 April 1671 and listed as "Citizens of France."
There apparently is a record of a John Goute [sic] that arrived in New Kent, Virginia, at the head of the York River, east of Richmond, Virginia, on 5 March 1654. This John was transported by John Peteete. If this record is correct, then this John Goute probably was born by 1636. This surely must refer to John Gootee Senior if correct.

It must be John Gootee Junior who was a witness to the will of Andrew Insley on 14 April 1699 which names Michael Todd as a son-in-law.

It is possible John Gootee the Younger who appears in the Maryland Calendar of Wills, Volume 7, as a witness to the will of John Hollock, since the will is made in Dorchester County, Maryland. However, another John Gootee, a son of Joseph Gootee Junior and his first wife Sarah, also lived in Dorchester County, Maryland at this time.

This John Gootee must be the one who gave a deposition on 12 June 1764 in OLD 20 218 where he stated his age of “54 years or upwards”. The depositions in this land record were given to a Dorchester County, Maryland, court and we assume this John Gootee lived in Dorchester County at that time. This John Gootee therefore was born about 1710. This John Goote may have died before 30 March 1780 in Maryland.
This is where is gets very confusing. Need to research the following from an internet listing. Seems to mix two John Gootees in my opinion:

We know Pritchett Gouty was born 04 July 1765 so he probably should have been age 45 at the time of the 1810 census, but he appears in the 26 to 44 age listing.
If Zachariah was born about 1778, he would have been about 32 years old in 1810.
John Gouty makes no mention of a wife in his will. He appointed William Stevens as sole executor. It is my opinion that he was living with Zachariah Gouty at the time of the 1810 census. There is a Wm. Stevans listed in the 1810 as age 26 to 44 with two males up to 10 years of age, one female up to 10 years of age, one female 16 to 26, and one female 26 to 45. It is likely this William Stevens was the person appointed as sole executor of the John Gouty estate.
The 1820 census for Caroline County, Maryland, only lists Abel Gowty, James Gowly(probably Gowty), and Thomas Gowty. John Gootee and his wife were both death by 1820. Pritchett Gouty and his family had moved to Ohio before 1820.

Joseph Gouty Senior married second Ann Harper by 1714 (See OLD 6 226 dated 09 August 1714, Dorchester County, MD. They were the parents of four children by 12 June 1718 when she married William Houlton.(MDAD 1:106). Ann Harper was the daughter of William Harper. She died after November 1728.

In 1696 Alexander Johnson left 100 acres to his daughter Elizabeth, who later married Joseph Gootee Junior. (Volume 2, Virginia’s Eastern Shore by Ralph T. Whitelaw). The bequest by Johnson to his daughter Elizabeth had been entailed and they had no right to sell the land.
Joseph Junior and wife Elizabeth had a daughter, Mary, who married Levin Taylor, and she proved title to the land in 1756 and Thomas Marsey (Massey) deeded his claim to the Taylors. In the name of God Amen I Joseph gouty Senr. of Dorchester County in the province of Maryland planter being very sick and weak in body but of sound and perfect memory thanks be given unto God therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed of God for all men once to dye doe principally and first of all recommend my soule into the hands of God that gave it as for my body I recommend unto the Earth from whence it was taken to have such adecent and Christianlike burial as my Exects. hereafter named shall think fitt and as touching such worldly estate which it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I give deviss and dispose of the same in the following manner and form
Item: I give and bequeath unto my well belowed wife Ann Gouty my now dwelling plantation called Calieas for and during the time of her widowhood or day of her death which shall first happen and then unto my son Jacob Gouty and his heires for ever, to be delivered unto him at the age of sixteen years, but if my said wife shall continue a widow till my said son Jacob shall attain to the age of sixteen then my aforesaid plantation houses and orchards to be equally devided between my said wife and said son and she to hold the ??? ???? during the time of widowhood or death as aforesaid and then to my said son Jacob and his heires for ever.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Ann Gouty all my personal estate during the time of her widowhood but if my siad wife shall marry then I give unto her but one third part of my personal estate and the remainder unto my son Jacob Gouty and his heires for ever to be delivered unto m at the age of sixteen years and if my said wife shall remain a widow at that time then my said personal estate to be equally divided between her and my aforesaid son.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Andrew Gouty two hundred acres of land originally called Calias commonly called and known by the name of the Lower? Landing to him and his heirs for ever lawfully begotten of his body and for default of issue to my son Jacob Goutee.

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I Mary Gowtee of Accomack County being of sound mind and disposing memory and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and desirous to settle all my worldly affairs, do by these presents make and ordain this my last will and testament in the following, to wit,
I devise unto my son, Joseph Gowtee his heirs and assign for ever the Plantation and land whereon I now live on condition he gives unto my two daughters, Mary and Triphina two negroes that is to say the negro girl called Sarah to Triphina and the boy called Stephen unto Mary to them and their heirs. But if the said Joseph should deny or refuse to deliver the said negroes unto my aforesaid daughters when by them required, then I devise the said land and Plantation unto my son Lisney Gowtee his heirs and assigns forever on condition that the said Lisney when by aforesaid daughters reasonably required, pay unto each of them a good negro of about twelve years old.
I give unto my son John Gowtee my negro woman called Press to him and his heirs and assign forever he paying unto my son Andrew twenty pounds (£20) current money and in case any of my children should clain any right to any part of the said negro woman by virtue of any claim from their Fathers estate, then I hereby direct that all such of my estate herein given to them shall be void and such ones part shall go to those who relinquish their claim to the said negro woman I give unto my son Lisney my hand mill to him and assigns.
I give unto my daughter Trephina my horse and sadle to her and her assigned and also my trunk with lock and key and all such things as shall be found therein at the time of my death.
I give unto my daughter Mary my mare and sadle to her and her assigned also the goods and other things she now has in her possession.
I give unto my daughter Trephina her choice of my beds with furniture thereto belonging.
Lastly I devise all of the remainder of my personal estate to be sold and that my debts be justly paid out of the same and the overplus of such sale be divided amongst all my children and I hereby nominate my two sons Lisney and John executors of this my will. John Gowtee the other executor relinquishing taking upon himself the trust thereof taking the oath and giving John Massey and Levin Taylor for his securitys who entered into and acknowledged a bond for that purpose. Certificate is granted him for obtaining probate thereof in due form.

I. Joseph Gootee Senior, son of John Gootee and Margaret, was born about 1660 in France. He married first Elizabeth Insley 25 Feb 1689/90 daughter of Andrew Insley and Margaret Jones. They were the parents of eight children:
1. Joseph Junior – born about 1691 in Dorchester County, Maryland. Joseph Junior married first a lady named Sarah in March 1710/1711. Probably Sarah Mills. He married second Elizabeth Johnson by 1719. Joseph Gootee Junior died in 1728 in Accomack County, Virginia.
2. John the Elder – born about 1692 in Dorchester County, Maryland. He married Mary Lisney before 1727 in Accomack County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Ralph Lisney and Mary Crowland. She was born perhaps in 1697 and died 20 August 1764 in Accomack County, Virginia. John the Elder died 31 May 1748 in Accomack County, Virginia.
3. Ruth – born about 1695 in Dorchester County, Maryland. She died about 1774 in Maryland. Supposedly also married a William Robinson about 1708.
4. Jacob – born about 1696 in Dorchester County, Maryland. Jacob married Margery Pritchett Wingate about 1720? Margery Pritchett probably had first married a Wingate before she married Jacob. Jacob died 09 March 1779 in Maryland.
5. Andrew – born about 1698 in Dorchester County, Maryland. He married Agnes Woodland (perhaps Harper) before 07 November 1729 in Dorchester Co, Md. She died in April 1768 in Dorchester Co, Md. Andrew died about 1774 in Dorchester Co, Md.
6. Elizabeth – born about 1699. She married Anthony Shorter. She died after June 1743.
7. Mary – born about ? She married William Robinson. She died 08 Mar 1728/29, St Peters Parish Rec. Talbot Co, Md.
8. Rosannah (Anne) – born about 1700, Dorchester County, Maryland. She married a William Button.
Elizabeth Insley Gootee died before 1714. (1714 6 Old 226/ Aug 9, 1714 Joseph Gouty Senr, Planter, and Ann Gouty, his wife, to William Robinson, Shoemaker: "Cante", containing 100 acres more or less and "Ganders Labrinth" adjacent to Cante, near the mouth of Goose Creek, containing 195 acres, more or less. Tracts formerly belonging to John Gouty Senior and John Gouty Junior, Father and Brother of said Joseph Gouty.)
Joseph Gouty Senior married second Ann Harper by 1714. They were the parents of four children by 12 June 1718 when she married William Houlton.(MDAD 1:106). Ann Harper was the daughter of William Harper. She died after November 1728.
1. John the Younger – born after 1711. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Lnu. She was born about 1719 and died after 1764. John the Younger died in 1764.
2. Triphena – born after 1711.
3. Lucy – born after 1711.
4. Elinor – born after 1711.
Joseph Gootee Senior died in 1716. (Joseph Gootee, Sr., planter, made a will dated January 4, 1716, and it was probated March 13, 1716 (Wills 14, 319). The abstract of his will shows that he devised "Callis" his dwelling plantation to his wife, Ann. It also named John, his eldest son, and sons Jacob, Andrew, Joseph and youngest son John. The abstract also named daughters Elizabeth Shorter, Mary Robinson, Ruth, Rosannah, Triphena, Lucy and Elinor.
Ann, widow of Joseph Senior married William Houlton by 12 June 1718.(Ann Extr of Joseph Goutee Dorchester County. MDAD 1:106).

H married Elizabeth Johnson by 1719 (Joseph Goutee and wife Elizabeth, Dorset Co, Md, sold 100 acres inherited from Alexander Johnson to John Massey. (A169)). Joseph Gootee Junior died in 1728. (Second day of June 1728 I Joseph Gouty of the County of Accomack in the Colony of Virginia being sick and weak in body.) 2 Jun 1728 - 6 Feb 1728/9 Joseph Gouty will - To wife Elizabeth (Johnson). To brother John Gouty (John Gouty the Elder). To daughter Mary (under 16). Brother John (John Gouty the Elder) and friend John Tankard, Executors. Wittnesses: Priscilla Burton, Robert Leonard, Elizabeth Tankard. (Accomack County Wills 1715-1729).
In 1696 Alexander Johnson left 100 acres (A169) to his daughter Elizabeth, who later married Joseph Gootee Junior. (Vol 2, Virginia’s Eastern Shore by Ralph T. Whitelaw). Note: The bequest by Johnson to his daughter Elizabeth had been entailed and they had no right to sell the land. They had a daughter Mary, who married Levin Taylor and she proved title to the land in 1756 and Thomas Marsey (Massey) deeded his claim to the Taylors. This Joseph Gootee married a Rachael (?Brittingham?). It should be this Joseph Gootee who is listed as owning 695 & 1/2 acres in the List of lands held by Papists in Dorchester County, returned by Charles Dickinson, Collector of Quit Rents, to the Keeper of the Rent Rolls, in 1758.
IV. Joseph Gootee, the son of Andrew Gootee and Agnes Harper (or Woodland). He married a Mary Griffith.

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I Mary Gowtee of Accomack County being of sound mind and disposing memory and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and desirous to settle all my worldly affairs, do by these presents make and ordain this my last will and testament in the following, to wit,
I devise unto my son, Joseph Gowtee his heirs and assign for ever the Plantation and land whereon I now live on condition he gives unto my two daughters, Mary and Triphina two negroes that is to say the negro girl called Sarah to Triphina and the boy called Stephen unto Mary to them and their heirs. But if the said Joseph should deny or refuse to deliver the said negroes unto my aforesaid daughters when by them required, then I devise the said land and Plantation unto my son Lisney Gowtee his heirs and assigns forever on condition that the said Lisney when by aforesaid daughters reasonably required, pay unto each of them a good negro of about twelve years old.
I give unto my son John Gowtee my negro woman called Press to him and his heirs and assign forever he paying unto my son Andrew twenty pounds (£20) current money and in case any of my children should clain any right to any part of the said negro woman by virtue of any claim from their Fathers estate, then I hereby direct that all such of my estate herein given to them shall be void and such ones part shall go to those who relinquish their claim to the said negro woman I give unto my son Lisney my hand mill to him and assigns.
I give unto my daughter Trephina my horse and sadle to her and her assigned and also my trunk with lock and key and all such things as shall be found therein at the time of my death.
I give unto my daughter Mary my mare and sadle to her and her assigned also the goods and other things she now has in her possession.
I give unto my daughter Trephina her choice of my beds with furniture thereto belonging.
Lastly I devise all of the remainder of my personal estate to be sold and that my debts be justly paid out of the same and the overplus of such sale be divided amongst all my children and I hereby nominate my two sons Lisney and John executors of this my will. John Gowtee the other executor relinquishing taking upon himself the trust thereof taking the oath and giving John Massey and Levin Taylor for his securitys who entered into and acknowledged a bond for that purpose. 6. John Gootee, son of Jacob Gootee and Margery Pritchett Wingate. Jacob Gootee was the son of Joseph Gootee Senior and his wife first wife Elizabeth Insley. John Gootee was born about 1738 and died 04 August 1818. He married Elizabeth Pritchett, a daughter of Phunback Pritchett.
Four Joseph Gootees:
I. Joseph Gootee Senior, son of John Gootee and Margaret, was born about 1660 in France. He married first Elizabeth Insley 25 Feb 1689/90 daughter of Andrew Insley and Margaret Jones. They were the parents of eight children:
1. Joseph Junior – born about 1691 in Dorchester County, Maryland. Joseph Junior probably married first a Sarah Mills in March 1710/1711. He married second Elizabeth Johnson by 1719. Joseph Gootee Junior died in 1728 in Accomack County, Virginia.
2. John the Elder – born about 1692 in Dorchester County, Maryland. He married Mary Lisney before 1727 in Accomack County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Ralph Lisney and Mary Crowland. She was born perhaps in 1697 and died 20 August 1764 in Accomack County, Virginia. John the Elder died 31 May 1748 in Accomack County, Virginia.
3. Ruth – born about 1695 in Dorchester County, Maryland. She died about 1774 in Maryland. Supposedly also married a William Robinson about 1708.
4. Jacob – born about 1696 in Dorchester County, Maryland. Jacob married Margery Pritchett Wingate about 1720? Margery Pritchett probably had first married a Wingate before she married Jacob. Jacob died 09 March 1779 in Maryland.
5. Andrew – born about 1698 in Dorchester County, Maryland. He married Agnes Woodland (perhaps Harper) before 07 November 1729 in Dorchester Co, Md. She died in April 1768 in Dorchester Co, Md. Andrew died about 1774 in Dorchester Co, Md.
6. Elizabeth – born about 1699. She married Anthony Shorter. She died after June 1743.
7. Mary – born about ? She married William Robinson. She died 08 Mar 1728/29, St Peters Parish Rec. Talbot Co, Md.
8. Rosannah (Anne) – born about 1700, Dorchester County, Maryland. She married a William Button.
Elizabeth Insley Gootee died before 1714. (1714 6 Old 226/ Aug 9, 1714 Joseph Gouty Senr, Planter, and Ann Gouty, his wife, to William Robinson, Shoemaker: "Cante", containing 100 acres more or less and "Ganders Labrinth" adjacent to Cante, near the mouth of Goose Creek, containing 195 acres, more or less. Tracts formerly belonging to John Gouty Senior and John Gouty Junior, Father and Brother of said Joseph Gouty.)
Joseph Gouty Senior married second Ann Harper by 1714. They were the parents of four children by 12 June 1718 when she married William Houlton.(MDAD 1:106). Ann Harper was the daughter of William Harper. She died after November 1728.
1. John the Younger – born after 1711. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Lnu. She was born about 1719 and died after 1764. John the Younger died in 1764.
2. Triphena – born after 1711.
3. Lucy – born after 1711.
4. Elinor – born after 1711.
Joseph Gootee Senior died in 1716. (Joseph Gootee, Sr., planter, made a will dated January 4, 1716, and it was probated March 13, 1716 (Wills 14, 319). The abstract of his will shows that he devised "Callis" his dwelling plantation to his wife, Ann. It also named John, his eldest son, and sons Jacob, Andrew, Joseph and youngest son John. The abstract also named daughters Elizabeth Shorter, Mary Robinson, Ruth, Rosannah, Triphena, Lucy and Elinor.

In 1696 Alexander Johnson left 100 acres (A169) to his daughter Elizabeth, who later married Joseph Gootee Junior. (Vol 2, Virginia’s Eastern Shore by Ralph T. Whitelaw). Note: The bequest by Johnson to his daughter Elizabeth had been entailed and they had no right to sell the land. They had a daughter Mary, who married Levin Taylor and she proved title to the land in 1756 and Thomas Marsey (Massey) deeded his claim to the Taylors. Jacob Goutee is listed as the owner of several tracts of land in Maryland in the 1700s. The earliest tract of land owned by Jacob Goutee apparently was called Middle Ridge that he patented in 1745 for 10 acres.(TT) In 1748, Jacob Goutee patented Goutees Chance consisting of 17 acres.(SS) Jacob Goutee also is listed as the owner of a tract named Goutees Marsh, which he patented in 1764 and consisted of 13 and 1/2 acres.(RR)
11. Joseph Gootee --The father of Jacob Gootee, Joseph was born in France in 1661. He was the second of three children of John and Margaret Gootee who immigrated to Maryland from France. Sometime before 1691, Joseph married his first wife, Elizabeth Insley (d.after 1711), who was the second of two daughters of Andrew Insley (d.1699) and Margaret Jones (d. before 1698) of Dorcester Co. MD (Elizabeth’s sister was named Margaret). Together the couple had 3 children: Jacob, Ruth (d.ca.1762), and Andrew (ca.1698-1774). After the death of his first wife, Elizabeth, around 1698-1712, Joseph married Ann Harper, with whom he had four more children. Joseph died in 1716 in Dorchester Co., Maryland.

7. Sarah "Sally" Gootee --The mother of Sally Turner and first wife of Garretson Turner, Sally Gootee (or Gouty) was born ca. 1790-94, the oldest of six children of Mr.& Mrs. Abel Gootee. She gave birth to eleven children and died in 1833, at the approximate age of 41 years, in Caroline Co. MD. Her children were: Zebediah (b.ca.1813), Zachariah (b.ca.1815), Maria (b.ca.1819), Zebediah, Richard (b.ca.1820), Elizabeth (b.ca.1822), Henry (b.ca.1824), William (b.ca.1826), Eliza Ann (b.ca.1828), Mary Jane (b.1829), Margaret (b.ca.1831), and Sarah "Sally" Turner (1833-ca.1852/3).
8. Abel Gootee --The father of Sally Gootee, Abel Gootee was born ca.1765-70, probably in Caroline Co. MD, the third of five children of John and Elizabeth Gootee. Abel married three times, the first marriage being to the mother of Sally, the second daughter of Richard and Sarah Andrew, whose first name has unfortunately been lost (she was born ca. 1765-74 and died shortly after 1810). They had six children together: Sarah (ca.1790/94-1833), Arnold (b.ca.1791-1800), Eliza, Maria (b.ca.1800-10), William E. (b.1803) and Nancy (b.1803). Abel’s second wife was Elizabeth Wheadleton, whom he married in 1813 and with whom he had three more children. Abel’s third wife was Esther Brooks (b.ca.1789-90). He died sometime after 1827.
9. John Gootee (Jr.) --The father of Abel Gootee, John was born ca. 1738 in Dorchester Co. MD, the oldest of four children of Jacob and Margery Gootee. John first married Elizabeth Pritchett (d.ca.1770-74), with whom John had five children: Rhoda (b. after 1755), Abel (b.ca. 1765/70), Britannia (b: ca 1765), Pritchett (b:1765), and Cynthia (b: ca. 1770-1780). Elizabeth was the youngest of ten children of Phunback Pritchett (after 1695-1769) of Dorchester Co. MD, the third of nine children of Dr. John and Abigail Pritchett. John Pritchett, who died ca. 1711/12, was a physician in Dorchester Co. MD. John’s second marriage was to Jemima (Brohawn?) with whom he had two more children. John died in Caroline Co. MD on Aug.4,1818.

Maryland conducted an extraordinary census in 1776 [that] listed everyone, male and female, adult and child, by name and included their age. People are listed by the "Hundred" (a political, military, and census subdivision of a county) in which they lived, so it's possible to locate them within a certain part of the county. Unfortunaty, this census does not list all counties or all Hundreds within counties. It is also, unfortunately, not organized by family but is simply a list of males and a separate list of females. Other useful records of the time include a list of militia members as of 1776, a tax list of 1777, lists of signers of the Loyalty Oaths of 1778, and another census of 1778, taken together to separate Tories from Whigs, and another tax list of 1783, taken to finance the War.

Chapter I of the 1671 Act of the Maryland Assembly naturalized John Gootee and Margaret his wife who were born in France. Chapter Ten of the 1695 Acts naturalized John and Joseph Gootee and John and Joseph Gootee sons of the said Joseph.
On March 16, 1677, a 100 acre tract of land was laid out for John Gootee. The tract was named "Canta" and it was located on the west side of Fising Bay adjoining Roasting Ear Point. On February 12, 1680, a 450 acre tract called "Callis" was surveyed for him; it was located on the western side of the Blackwater River.
On May 30, 1690, John Gootee, Sr., and Margaret his wife deeded to John Gootee, Jr., several tracts of land including "Insley's Point," "Bowbunck," and "Callis.:
On May 4, 1699, John Gootee, Jr., made his will and it was probated August 7, 1699. He devised all of his real estate to his father and mother, John and Margaret Gootee. His father, John Gootee, was named as executor.
Joseph Gootee, Sr., planter, made a will dated January 4, 1716, and it was probated March 13, 1716 (Wills 14, 319). The abstract of his will shows that he devised "Callis" his dwelling plantation to his wife, Ann. It also named John, his eldest son, and sons Jacob, Andrew, Joseph and youngest son John. The abstract also named daughters Elizabeth Shorter, Mary Robinson, Ruth, Rosannah, Triphena, Lucy and Elinor.
In 1691 John Gootee, Sr., and his wife Margaret had deeded "Graveling" to their son-in-law and daughter, John and Judith Cole.

On June 11, 1669, a 50 acre tract of land on Hungar River was surveyed for Andrew Insley; it was called "Insleys Chance." Patent Record, Liber 6, Folio 27, shows that Andrew Insley was transported into the Province of Maryland in 1669 and was in service until 1667. He married Margaret Jones whom he transported in 1668 (Pat. L11 F507).
Dorchester Land Record 5 OLD 125 dated November 19, 1698, names Andrew Insley and Elizabeth, his wife. Apparently, Andrew married a second time. In deed 5 OLD 125 Andrew and Elizabeth transferred property to their son-in-law, Michael Todd, cordwayner alias shoemaker, and their daughter Margaret Todd, his wife. This same deed named Joseph Goutey (Gootee), son-in-law of Andrew and Elizabeth.
In Dorchester Land Record 2 OLD 163 dated July 13, 1722, Mary Insley, daughter of Andrrew Insley, is shown as the mother of George Hooper.
Andrew Insley made a will dated April 14, 1699, which was probated August 2, 1699. In the abstract of his will he named his wife, Elizabeth, sons James and William; daughter Mary; son-in-law Michael Todd and his wife Mary (probably intended to be Margaret).

In 1684 a 200 acre tract called "Griffiths Chance" was surveyed for Henry Griffith; it was located on the west side of Cone Creek (Nanticoke Creek). He later had several additional tracts patented.
Dorchester Land Record 5 OLD 140 dated September 1, 1699, shows that Henry Griffith married Elizabeth Tassell, the widow of Francis Tassell.
Dorchester Land Record 5 OLD 108 dated February 1, 1697/8 sows that Henry Griffith had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Walter Cemey.
Henry Griffith, planter of Dorchester County, made a will dated February 22, 1708, which was probated August 9, 1709. In his will he named sons Samuel, John, and Abraham; daughter Sarah Griffith (Wills Part II - 12, 223).

Joseph Goutee and wife Elizabeth, Dorset Co, Md, sold 100 acres inherited from Alexander Johnson to John Massey. (A169). Note: The bequest by Johnson to his daughter Elizabeth had been entailed and they had no right to sell the land. They had a daughter Mary, who married Levin Taylor and she proved title to the land in 1756 and Thomas Marsey (Massey) deeded his claim to the Taylors. In 1785, Mary Taylor, widow, and son Jesse and his wife, Rachel, sold 37 acres to William Massey. the next year Mary deeded the balance to Jesse and he and his wife Rachel, sold to Jabez Pitt.( Vol. 2, Va.ES by Whitelaw)
