Mary Goodner was born 20 March 1802 in Guilford County, North Carolina.(1) She was the daughter of Jacob Goodner and Hester (probably pronounced Ester) White.(2) Jacob and Hester were married about 25 November 1798 in Guilford County, North Carolina.(3)

Unfortunately, Hubert W. Lacey, the author of The Goodner Family, failed to identify Mary Goodner as a child of Jacob Goodner and Hester (White) Goodner.(4) Otherwise, The Goodner Family gives an excellent detailed and documented analysis of the children of Jacob Goodner and Hester White.

Mary Goodner married
John Ricketts, a son of Robert Ricketts Senior and his wife, Susannah (Unknown – NOT Wilson), about 1818 or 1819.(5) No marriage record has been found.(6) John Ricketts was born 01 February 1787 and died 23 February 1843.(7)

John Ricketts and Mary Goodner were the parents of the following children:

i. Susannah Ricketts was born about 1818 in Dearborn Co., IN.(8) There should be little doubt that Susannah was named after John Ricketts' mother. She married Thomas J. Mitchell on 31 March 1832 in Vermillion Co., IN.(9) He was born 26 October 1808 and died 11 May 1893.(10) Susannah died 07 May 1897.(11)

ii. Esther Ann Ricketts was born 20 September 1819 in Dearborn Co., IN.(12) There should be little doubt that she was named after Mary Goodner's mother Hester White. Esther Rickets married Aaron Betzer on 22 February 1838.(13) Aaron was born 04 October 1815 in Adelphi, Ross, Ohio, and died 16 September 1889 in Cherokee Co., Kansas.(14) Esther Ann Ricketts Betzer died 04 February 1911 in Cherokee Co., Kansas.(15 )

iii. Mary Ann Ricketts was born about 1821 in Dearborn Co., IN.(16) She married John Drake on 31 March 1839.(17) The 1850 Indiana Federal Census shows them in Vermillion Co.(18)

iv. Benjamin "Buy" W. Ricketts was born about 1822 in Dearborn Co., IN.(19)
He married Mary Barnett in 1851 in Vermilion Co., Illinois.(20)

v. John W. Ricketts was born 11 April 1824 in Dearborn Co., IN.(20A) He married Anna Drake in 1848.(21) The 1850 Indiana Federal Census lists them as John Ricketts age 26 born in Indiana, Anna Ricketts age 21 born in Ohio, family #230.(22) Jacob Ricketts, a brother of John, was listed as family #229 on the same census page. John died 03 February 1902 in Edmond Township, Oklahoma Co., Oklahoma.(22A)

vi. Jacob Ricketts was born 22 February 1826 in Dearborn Co., IN. (23) He died 03 May 1910 in Vermillion Co., IN.(24) Jacob first married Nancy Jane Scott on 18 May 1847.(25) Nancy died about 1860. Jacob then married Melissa Jane Barnard on 21 March 1861 in Danville, Vermilion Co., Illinois.(26) Melissa was born 11 December 1841 in Vermillion Co., IN.(27) Jacob Ricketts and Melissa Barnard Ricketts are buried at the Lower Mound Cemetery in Highland Township, Vermillion Co., Indiana. Jacob served in the 57th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Company D, during the Civil War and was in the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee.

vii. Phoebe Ricketts was born 24 September 1827 Dearborn Co., IN.(28) She married William Cheeseum (Chezum) in 1846.(29) The 1850 Indiana Federal Census lists William Cheezum age 25 born in Ohio, Pheba Cheezum age 23 born in Ohio, family #995.(30)

viii. Catherine Ricketts was born about 1829 in Indiana.(31) She married Benjamin Drake in 1845.(32) The 1870 Missouri Federal Census lists Benjamin Drake age 48 born in Ohio, Catherine Drake age 41 born in Indiana, dwelling #240.(33)

ix. Isaac Ricketts was born 27 December 1830 in Hendricks Co., IN.(34) Isaac married Mary Jane Chezem in 1850.(35) The 1850 Indiana Federal Census lists Jane Cheezum as age 19 born in Indiana and living with her parents, Samuel and Elizabeth Cheezum in Parke Co..(36) The 1860 Indiana Federal Census lists Isaac Ricketts age 29 born in Indiana, Mary J. Ricketts age 28 born in Indiana, living in Highland Township, Vermillion Co.(37)

x. William Ricketts was born 26 February 1833 in Vermillion Co., IN.(38) He died 27 August 1907 at Perrysville, Vermillion Co., Indiana.(39)

xi. Levi Ricketts was born in 24 June 1836 in Vermillion Co., IN.(40) No marriage record found. He was living with his mother, Mary Ricketts, according to the 1850 Indiana Federal Census.(41) He died 03 October 1855 and is buried in the Ricketts Cemetery.(42)

xii. Ellen Ricketts was born June 3, 1837, in Vermillion Co., IN.(43)( ) She married Francis M. Cromer in 1855.(44) She died 23 June 1856 and is buried in the Ricketts Cemetery.(45)

xiii. Margaret Ricketts was born about 1839 in Vermillion Co., IN.(46) She married Cyrus Wright in 1857.(47) Another County Court Record shows the date as January 15, 1857. The 1860 Indiana Federal Census lists Cyrus Wright age 23 born in Indiana and Margaret Wright age 21 born in Indiana.(48) The U.S. Civil War draft records list Cyrus Wright as age 25, married, and residing in Highland Township, Vermillion Co., Indiana, in 1863.(49)

xiv. Isabel Ricketts was born about 1842 in Vermillion Co., IN.(50) Isabel apparently married the widower of her sister Ellen, Francis M. Cromer.(51) The 1870 Illinois Federal Census lists Frank Cromer age 33 born in Indiana and Isabell Cromer age 28 born in Indiana.(52)

Land Transactions

Jacob Goodner, the father of Mary Goodner, first acquired land in Indiana on 14 August 1816 in Ohio County.(53) John Ricketts and his brother, Robert Ricketts Junior, assignees of Robert Ricketts Senior, acquired land jointly on 27 April 1819 near the land of Jacob Goodner.(54) Nathan Ricketts, probably a brother of Robert Ricketts Senior, acquired land in Ohio County, Indiana, also near to the land of Jacob Goodner.(55) The Nathan Ricketts and Jacob Goodner lands both were in Section 19 of township 3 North, Range 1 West, and were adjacent.

A deed dated 13 August 1830 from Aaron Purcell and Moria his wife of Vermillion Co., Indiana, to John Ricketts, also of Vermillion Co., Indiana, for $425.00 transferred the following land:

i. the West Half and the South East Quarter of Section 8 in Township 19 of Range 9 West containing 80 acres.

ii. the West Half of the South West Quarter of Section 4 in Township 19 North of Range 9 West containing 80 acres.

iii. 79 acres off of the North End of the East Half of the South West Quarter of Section 8 in Township 19 North of Range 9 West.

iv. 40 acres off of the South End of the East Half of the North West Quarter of Section 17 North in Township 19 North of Range 9 West.

v. 40 acres off of the North End of the East Half of the South East Quarter of Section 5 in Township 19 North of Range 9 West in the Crawfordsville Land District.(56)

John Goodner, a brother of Mary Goodner, purchased land in Vermilion Co., Illinois, as early as 01 July 1826.(57) Perhaps Jacob Goodner had plans to move with some of his family to Vermilion Co., Illinois, adjacent the west side of Vermilion Co., Indiana, in the 1830s. He never moved to Illinois before he died. Perhaps some of the land he purchased in Vermilion Co., Illinois, was to assist several of his sons in becoming farmers there.

Jacob Goodner of Dearborn Co., Indiana, purchased 72 acres and 49/100s of an acre on 23 May 1831 in Vermilion Co., Illinois(58) He also bought 80 acres on 30 March 1837 in Township 21 North, Range 12 West, the East Half of the SouthWest Quarter of Section 35 in Vermilion Co., Illinois.(59) Another Vermilion Co., Illinois, deed was to Jacob Goodner from an Evert Vanvickle on 26 September 1834.(60)

John Ricketts also acquired land in Vermilion Co., Illinois. John Ricketts of Vermillion Co., Indiana, acquired 80 acres on 20 March 1837 in Township 20 North, Range 11 West, Section 7.(61) Land records in Vermilion Co., Illinois, also include a sale from John Ricketts, husband of Mary Goodner, to Michael Goodner, a brother of Mary Goodner, on 08 December 1838.(62)

Census Records

Both the 1820 and 1830 US Federal Census for Dearborn Co., Indiana, list John Ricketts.(63) A John Rickett also is listed in the 1830 Vermillion County, Indiana, census.(64) Apparently the John Ricketts family moved from Dearborn Co., IN, to Vermillion Co., IN in 1830. The 1840 Federal Census for Indiana also lists John Ricketts.(65)

The 1850 U. S. Federal Census for Indiana, Vermillion Co., Highland Township, enumerated 25 October 1850 shows: Mary Ricketts, age 47, female, value of real estate $1,390, born in North Carolina. There were seven younger males and females living in the household of which she appears to have been the head.(66)

The 1860 U. S. Federal Census for Indiana indicates Mary Ricketts was born in Indiana.(67) It seems likely that information was given by someone in the household who did not know she was born in North Carolina, since evidence clearly indicates she was born in North Carolina to parents who were married in North Carolina. She was listed as the head of household and she was literate.

Switzerland County, Indiana Probate Order Book Abstracts 1837-1849, Fort Wayne, Indiana 2017:

"The page that you attached does not appear to come from the official probate books. It looks like it may be a report made by the administrator to the court and filed with other loose papers in the probate packet. The top part of the page “State of Indiana, Switzerland County, SS” states where the paper was written. The official books tend to start with “Estate of so and so.” The packets are stored in the basement of the Switzerland County Courthouse and are organized by the first letter of the surname. Multiple drawers may need to be searched to locate the correct packet.

I unfortunately live too far away from Vevay to make regular research trips. You may contact the Switzerland County Historical Society (http://www.switzcomuseums.org) to see if they can recommend a local researcher."
