Chesterfield Worth was born in 1850 in Rush County, Indiana. He probably was born between June 28th and July 12th. The U. S. Census for Indiana, 1850, enumerated September 4, lists Chesterfield D. Worth as 1 year old.(1) The U. S. Census for Indiana, 1860, enumerated July 12th, lists Chester F. D. Worth as 10 years old.(2) The U. S. Census for Illinois, 1880, enumerated June 28th, lists Chesterfield Worth as age 29.(3) The census records for 1850 and 1860 indicate Chesterfield Worth had a middle initial of "D".
Chesterfield was the son of John Worth and Julia Ann Drysdale.(4) John Worth and Julia Ann Drysdale were married June 5, 1837, in Rush County, Indiana.(5) According to the U. S. Census for Indiana, 1850, John and Julia Ann Worth were the parents of at least six children, all born in Indiana: Seth, James, John C., Mary J., Elizabeth, and Chesterfield Worth.(6) Julia Ann (Drysdale) Worth died April 10, 1856, and was buried in the Old Boggstown Cemetery at Boggstown, Shelby County, Indiana.(7) John and Julia Worth may have had other children between the time of the 1850 census and the date of Julia's death in 1856.
John Worth married Mary Jane (Lemon) Stephens in Shelby County, Indiana, on January 1, 1857.(8) The U. S. Census for Indiana, 1860, for the John and Mary J. Worth household probably includes children from both of their previous marriages.(9) Chesterfield Worth married Lucy Jane Harmison.(10) She was the daughter of Isaiah Harmeson and Melissa Perkins.(11) Lucy Jane Harmison was born in April 1851 in the state of Indiana.(12) A marriage record for Lucy Harmison and Doctor Dillon was found in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois, with a September 8, 1872, marriage date.(13) The first child of Chesterfield and Lucy Worth, Elizabeth A. Worth, probably was born in 1873.(14) Isaphine Worth, a daughter of Chesterfield and Lucy Jane (Harmison) Worth, gave her father's name as "Dock Worth" on her marriage license application in Terre Haute, Indiana.(15)
Chesterfield Worth and Lucy Jane Harmison were the parents of seven children: Elizabeth Ann, Jesse, Clara Belle, Mellisa (Melessia M.), Margaret, Isaphine, and Ethel Leona Worth.(16) Annie Worth (Elizabeth A. Worth) died at age 18. She was buried at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, Indiana, on September 23, 1891.(17)
Chesterfield Worth apparently died in 1891 at Terre Haute, Indiana, probably sometime after March of that year. The 1892 Terre Haute City Directory lists Lucy Worth as the widow of Chesterfield.(18) Ethel Leona Worth, the youngest child of Chesterfield and Lucy Worth, was born January 1, 1892, in Terre Haute, Indiana. Both the death certificate and the social security application form of Ethel Leona (Worth) Older show that her father was Chesterfield Worth and that her mother was Lucy Jane Harmison.(19) No will or estate papers have been found for Chesterfield Worth nor is it known where he is buried. Chesterfield was dead at the time Ethel was born. Her Social Security application gives her birth date as January 1, 1892.
Lucy Jane Harmison, the only wife of Chesterfield Worth, remarried on June 9, 1896, in Terre Haute, Indiana. Lucy married Jesse Lewellen.(20) Jesse was the widower of Elizabeth Worth, a sister of Chesterfield. Jesse Lewellen and Elizabeth Worth were married in Montgomery County, Indiana, on November 17, 1864. "The proper Consent having been first filed by Jesse Lewallyn & John Worth a resident of said county." Jesse Lewallyn was the father of Jesse Lewellen, and John Worth was the father of Elizabeth Worth, Chesterfield's sister.(21) The 1896 Vigo County marriage record proves Jesse Lewellen was the same man who married Elizabeth A. Worth in 1864 in Montgomery County, Indiana. Elizabeth (Worth) Lewellen died sometime after March 25, 1888, and before June 1896.(22)
There is no reason to doubt Jesse Lewellen and Lucy Jane (Harmison) Worth knew each other many years before they married in 1896. Chesterfield and Lucy Jane Worth named two of their children after Jesse and Elizabeth Lewellen. The U. S. Census for Illinois, 1880, Vermilion County, Oakwood Township, indicates the first female child of Chesterfield Worth and Lucy Jane (Harmison) Worth was named Elizabeth. Their first male child was named Jesse.(23)
A number of census records connect various members of the Worth and Lewellen families with Shannandale, Montgomery County, Indiana. Jonathan Lewellen, perhaps a cousin of Jessie Lewellen, married Martha A. Worth, a sister or step-sister of Chesterfield Worth, on April 21, 1869, in Montgomery County, Indiana.(24) Jonathan and Martha A. (Worth) Lewellen are listed in the U. S. Census for Indiana, 1880, in Shannandale, Montgomery County, Indiana.(25)
George Horn married Mary J. Worth, a sister of Chesterfield, on May 14, 1866, in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.(26) In the same wedding ceremony, John C. Worth, a brother of Chesterfield, married Matilda Horn, a sister of George Horn.(27) John C. Worth served in the 120th Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.(28) Records in his service file clearly identify him as a son of John Worth in Montgomery County, Indiana.
George and Mary Jane (Worth) Horn are listed in the U. S. Census for Indiana, 1880, in Shannandale, Franklin Township, Montgomery County.(29) John C. and Matilda (Horn) Worth and Jesse and Elizabeth (Worth) Lewellen, are listed on the same page in the U. S. Census for Indiana, 1880, for Shannandale, Montgomery County.(30) The father of Jesse Lewellen also was named Jesse Lewellen. He is listed in the U. S. Census for Indiana, 1870, Montgomery County, Franklin Township, with a post office of Shannandale.(31)
Lucy Jane (Harmison) (Worth) Lewellen died January 30, 1908, in Terre Haute, Indiana.(32) Because she was impoverished, she was given a county burial. She was buried at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, Indiana, where her grave has no tombstone.(33)
The following list provides information about the seven children of Chesterfield Worth and Lucy Jane Harmison:
1) Elizabeth Ann Worth was born in 1873 and died at age 18. According to records at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, Indiana, she was buried September 23, 1891. She has no tombstone because she was impoverished and received a county burial. Elizabeth was named after Chesterfield Worth's sister who married Jesse Lewellen in 1864 in Montgomery County, Indiana.(34)
2) Jesse Worth was born in February 1876 in Vermilion County, Illinois. The U. S. Census for Illinois, 1880, Vermilion County, Oakwood Township, lists Jesse in the Chesterfield and Lucy Jane Worth household, as age 4, born in Illinois, father born in Indiana, mother born in Indiana. The U. S. Census for Indiana, 1900, Vigo County, Jesse Lewellen household, lists Jessie Worth as born February 1876, age 24, born in Illinois, father born in Indiana, mother born in Indiana.(35)
The 1894 Terre Haute City Directory lists Jesse Worth as a laborer at the J. Hanley Mfg. Co. with residence at 22 Chesnut. The 1896 Terre Haute City Directory lists Jesse Worth as a tobacco maker at Fred J. Biel and a residence at 426 S. Water.(36)
Jesse Worth married Ida M. Luther in Terre Haute, Indiana, on August 10, 1901.(37) Jesse Worth murdered his wife, Iva May, on 23 March 1925, a Monday. She was beaten to death and her body thrown on a river bank three miles south of Terre Haute. The Terre Haute Tribune on page 1, 24 March 1925, carried a gruesome picture of the murdered wife and the location where her body was found. An article also on page 1 of the paper indicates Jesse killed his wife at their home and grocery store at 1008 South Thirteenth Street early Monday morning. The dead woman had been identified by a sister who telephoned (Jesse) Worth that his wife was in the morgue. A picture also appears on page 1 of the paper entitled "The Slayer", which presumably is a picture of Jesse Worth about the time of the murder. The 1930 Indiana census lists the home of a Jesse Worth, age 53, born about 1876, as Michigan City, LaPorte, Indiana. The location is presumed to be that of an Indiana state prison.(38)
3) Clara Belle Worth was born May 2, 1878, in Illinois. She married William H. Duke.(39) Clara Belle died January 11, 1967, in Long Beach, California.(40) She was buried in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Long Beach. Aunt Clara helped raise Ethel Leona Worth after the death of Chesterfield.(41)
4) Mellisa (Melessia M.) Worth married Cuby V. Hutchings on April 11, 1898.(42) She was erroneously listed as a son, not daughter, of Chesterfield and Lucy Worth on her birth record in Champaign County, Illinois. The birth record also gives Chesterfield Worth’s middle initial as S.
5) Margaret Worth died in Norwalk, California. She married first: Weisenberg; second: Riley. Bruce Weisenberg, a son, changed his name to Worth during World War II. Bruce Weisenberg had two daughters. His last known address was in Simi Valley, California.(43)
6) Isaphine Worth was born in January 1885. She first married Herbert Kiefner on July 29, 1903.(44) She later married a man with a last name of Strandtman in Houston, Texas. Helen Strandtman, a daughter, lived in Houston.(45)
7) Ethel Leona Worth was born January 1, 1892, in Terre Haute, Indiana.(46) She married Roy Burton Older, March 1, 1911, in Decatur, Illinois.(47) Roy and Ethel were the parents of Truxton James, Wilma Jane, and Robert Burton Older.(48) Ethel Leona (Worth) Older died at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, Ventura County, California, December 26, 1976, at age 83.(49) She is buried next to her husband at Springhill Cemetery in Danville, Illinois.(50)
Pictures of Lucy Jane (Harmison) Worth and the brothers and sisters of Ethel Leona Worth, excepting Melissa Worth, are in the possession of Curtis Lynn Older. Curtis is a grandson of Ethel L. (Worth) Older. He obtained the pictures from Wilma Jane (Older) Zillman, a daughter of Ethel L. (Worth) Older.
Chesterfield Worth is listed in the John Worth household in the U. S. Census of Indiana, 1850 and 1860.(51) Chesterfield was not found in the U. S. Census of Indiana or Illinois, 1870. He did not live in the John Worth household in 1870.(52) Chesterfield and Lucy Jane Worth are in the U. S. Census of Illinois, 1880, Vermilion County, Oakwood Township.(53)

Older. Chesterfield Worth appears as the father and Lucy Jane Harmeson as the mother. (Per Curtis Lynn Older: Wilma Jane Zillman gave the wrong birth date. It should have been January 1, 1892, as per her Social Security application and census information.)
2) Obituary for Ethel Older in the Danville Commercial News dated approximately 27 or 28 December 1976 which lists Chesterfield Worth and Lucy Jane Harmeson Worth as her parents. There may be an obituary in a Ventura, California, newspaper as well.

Name of bride - Isaphine Worth, name of father - Dock Worth, mother’s maiden name - Lucy Harmeson, female, white, age next birthday - 19, date of marriage - July 29, 1903, Book 7, p. 42. The marriage record of Isaphine Worth substantiates that Chesterfield Worth also was known as "Doc" [Dock} [Doctor] Worth. This supports the marriage license in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois, that was for Doctor Dillon and Lucy Harmison. Doctor Dillon must have been Chesterfield Worth. Chesterfield Worth could not read or write at the time he married. He signed his marriage record with an “X” on page two. 6) Pictures of Lucy Jane Harmison and the brothers and sisters of Ethel Leona Worth which include inscriptions on the back side consisting of “My darling mother”, “my mother”, “My sister”, “William H. Duke Terre Haute, Ind. When he and sister Clara first met. When I was 12 years old”, “Isa”, “Clara Worth Age 18”, “Sister Anna”, and “Uncle Herbert”. Copies of these pictures were made by Curtis L. Older and are included in his genealogical records related to Ethel Leona Worth and Chesterfield Worth. The pictures were originally in the possession of Wilma Jane Older Zillman after her mother, Ethel Leona Worth, died.

Elizabeth Worth German, a sister of John Worth, was an ancestor of John German. She also was buried in the Old Boggstown Cemetery. Before Curtis L. Older visited the Old Boggstown Cemetery on August 26, 2000, vandals damaged many tombstones. The upper-left portion of the Julia Ann Worth tombstone, which included the letters "Juli", was broken off.

Other than the fact that Chesterfield could not read or write and would not know what was written on the marriage certificate as his name, I have no idea why he is listed on his marriage license as Doctor Dillon. He apparently went by the name “Dock” because one of his daughters, Isaphine Worth, lists her father’s name as Dock Worth on her marriage license. Perhaps his middle name was Dillon, but I have nothing else to support that possibility.
