William Hartman was living in the Elija and Sarah Harshbarger household at the time of the 1850 Wabash Township, Fountain County, Indiana census.(17) William was listed as age 23 and born in Virginia. William was listed as a farmer and apparently owned the land that Elijah Harshbarger, also listed as a farmer, was farming. The value of the real estate of William Hartman was shown as $200 while there was no real estate value associated with Elijah Harshbarger.

Sarah and Mary Hartman were sisters of William Hartman and daughters of George Hartman and his wife. Mary (Hartman) Harshbarger is listed in the 1850 census as 27 years old and born in Virginia.
(18) Sarah (Hartman) Harshbarger is listed in the 1850 census as 23 years old and born in Virginia.(19)

Several households living near to the Elijah and Sarah (Hartman) Harshbarger household where William Hartman lived in 1850 were related to William. Elizabeth Hartman, wife of George and mother of William, was listed as a head of household, age 55, and born in Virginia.
(20)

Living next to Elizabeth Hartman were David and Rebecca Rennicker.
(21) Rebecca Hartman, born July 9, 1822, in Rockingham County, Virginia, married David Rennicker on October 4, 1841, in Fountain County, Indiana.22) Rebecca's age in 1850 is given as 29 and she was born in Virginia.(23)

In the sketch, the parents of Rebecca Hartman are identified as also are her brothers and sisters.(27) Rebecca died March 9, 1888, in Vermillion County, Indiana, and was buried in Hicks Cemetery at Perrysville, Indiana.(28)

Living next to David and Rebecca (Hartman) Rennicker were Isaac and Mary (Hartman) Harshbarger.

(47) Elizabeth (Nicholas) Hartman died November 23, 1866, about four years after she married William Hartman.(48). It appears that the parents of Elizabeth (Nicholas) Hartman, William Nicholas and his wife Mahala Shute, raised Mary Luella Hartman after Elizabeth (Nicholas) Hartman died.(49) The 1870 U. S. Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township, lists William Nicholas, age 61, and Mahala, age 53. Mary Luella Hartman, age 6, born in Illinois, is listed in the William Nicholas household.(50) Mary Luella Hartman also is listed in the 1880 William Nicholas household.(51)

Gouty in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois.(52) Mahala (Shute) Nicholas, the wife of William Nicholas, was an older sister of Elizabeth Shute, the wife of Elias B. Gouty. Elias and Elizabeth (Shute) Gouty were the parents of Joseph P. Gouty.(53)

Joseph H. Hartman died December 26, 1866, a little more than two years after he was born. Perhaps Joseph H. and Elizabeth, his mother, died from a similar illness.

1) The tombstone of William Hartman at Hicks Cemetery, Perrysville, Indiana, indicates, "died May 31, 1896 aged 70 y 8 m 26 d". Therefore, William was born 5 September 1825.

2) Elizabeth Hartman, mother of William Hartman and widow of George Hartman was living near Elijah and Sarah (Hartman) Harshbarger in the 1850 Wabash Township, Fountain Co., IN, census. Elizabeth was listed as age 55 and born in Virginia.

3) William Hartman's father, George, died in 1843. George Hartman's estate was administered by Isaac Harshbarger. See Letters of Administration, Fountain County Court, Indiana, p.414, 18 Sept 1843, Deceased:  George Hartman, Administrator:  Isaac Harshbarger. Probate records list his heirs as Nancy Caroline, Elizabeth Anne (Ann), William, Andrew Jackson, John Alexander, Christina (Christiana), Isabel, and Zerelda Hartman, all minor children.  Priscilla, Mary, Rebecca and Sarah are married.  William Hartman and Elizabeth Anne Hartman were minor heirs "over the age of fourteen years", and chose Thomas Lyons as their guardian.  The Court then appointed Mr. Lyons as guardian for all the minor heirs.

William was listed as age 23 and born in Virginia. William was listed as a farmer and apparently owned the land that Elijah Harshbarger, also listed as a farmer, was farming. The value of the real estate of William Hartman was shown as $200 while there was no real estate value associated with Elijah Harshbarger.
