William Nicholas was born March 13, 1809, in Virginia.(1) Two biographical Sketches of William Nicholas that appear in historical books published in the late 1800s indicate William settled in Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana, in 1829.(2)
The parents of William Nicholas are not known with certainty. There is a listing in the 1830 Vermillion County, Indiana census for a William Nickles household.(3) The eldest male and female members in this household were both born between 1761 and 1770. Additional research leads us to believe the couple probably were a William Nicholas and his wife Isabelle Daugherty, married April 7, 1796, who were both born in 1769, probably in Greenbrier County, Virginia.(4)
Evaluating the 1840 and 1850 census records related to William Nicholas and the 1830 census record for William Nickles, one finds that a neighbor of the Nicholas family throughout that period of time was an individual named Reuben Rader. Research indicates that Reuben Rader married Barbara Nicholas. Rueben was born in 1795, according to census records, in Virginia.(5) He died in Perrysville, Indiana, in 1858.(6) Barbara Nicholas was born in Virginia in 1796 according to census records. Barbara Nicholas probably was a daughter of William and Isabelle Daugherty Nicholas and she probably was a sister of William Nicholas born in 1809.
Two daughters of Reuben and Barbara (Nicholas) Rader married in Vermillion County, Indiana. Delila Rader married Peter Webb on May 27, 1832, and Malinda Rader, born May27, 1813, in Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia, married Joseph Kelly on November 3, 1829.(7)
Other possible brothers and sisters of William Nicholas include:
1) Elizabeth Nicholas, born October 20, 1805, in Virginia, died May 4, 1868 in Perryville,Vermillion County, Indiana. She married Jacob Riley July 1, 1830, Vermillion County, Indiana. Jacob Riley was born February 10, 1803 in Hardin County, Kentucky. A Jacob Riley lived near the William Nicholas(Nickles) household in 1830.(8)
2) George Nicholas married Elizabeth Oxford on February 16, 1827, in Vermillion County, Indiana.(9)
3) Margaret Nicholas married John Cade on August 13, 1830, in Vermillion County, Indiana. A Cade family lived near to the William Nicholas(Nickles) household in 1830.(10)
4. Ann Nicholas married John Hollingsworth on August 15, 1839, in Vermillion County, Indiana. A Hollingsworth family lived near to William Nicholas(Nickles) in 1830.(11)
The William Nickles(Nicholas) of the 1830 Vermillion County, Indiana, census records probably was William Nicholas, born in 1769, in Renick, Greenbrier County, Virginia. He married Isabelle Daugherty, on April 7, 1796. She was born in 1769. The parents of William Nickles(Nicholas) of the 1830 census probably were John George Nicholas, born about 1741 in Straight Creek, Pendleton County, Virginia and his wife, Barbara Unknown, born about 1743 in Straight Creek, Pendleton County, Virginia.(12)
William Nicholas married Mahala Shute on June 11, 1835, near Gessie, Indiana.(13) Mahala Shute was born May 7, 1815, in Ohio.(14) Her parents were Richard Shute and Hannah McCartney.(15) Richard Shute was born October 16, 1792, in Dover, England.(16) He came to America with his father, John Shute, and his brother, William Shute, about 1802.(17) His mother Susan, remained in England. Richard married Hannah McCartney on March 31, 1814, in Scioto County, Ohio.(18) Hannah was a daughter of Daniel McCartney and Sarah Price.(19) She was born February 3, 1796, in Virginia.(20)
William Nicholas and Mahala Shute were the parents of six children:(21)
i. Corintha Nicholas was born March 31, 1836. She died January 20, 1915. She married James Baily Richardson in Vermillion County, Indiana, on February 24, 1852.(22)
ii. Sarah Ann Nicholas was born February 9, 1838.(23)
iii. Elizabeth Nicholas was born September 11, 1840.(24) She married William Hartman on October 19, 1862.(25) She died November 23, 1866.(26) William and Elizabeth (Nicholas) Hartman were the parents of at least two children. Mary Luella Hartman was born July 21, 1863, and Ezra E. Hartman possibly was born November 23, 1866.
iv. Barbara Hannah Nicholas, born October 31, 1843. She died October 23, 1846.(27)
v. Mary Susan Nicholas, born November 15, 1845. She died June 19, 1869.(28)
vi. Joseph Henry Clay Nicholas, born June 05, 1848. He died September 30, 1925.(29)
The William and Mahala (Shute) Nicholas household first appears in the 1840 Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township census.(30) The census shows one male age 30 and under 40, two females under age 5, one female age 20 and under 30, 4 people in the household, one of which was engaged in agriculture.
The 1850 census records indicate William Nicholas was age 41, a farmer, could not read or write, and was born in Virginia.(31) Mahala Nicholas was listed as age 35 and born in Ohio. The children included in the household were: Crintha age 14, Sarah A. age 12, Elizabeth age 9, Mary S. age 4, and Joseph H. age 2.
Elizabeth Nicholas, daughter of William and Mahala (Shute) Nicholas, was listed as 9 years old and living in the household of her parents in the 1850 census.(32) Elizabeth was listed as 20 years old and living in the household of her parents in the 1860 census.(33)
Elizabeth Nicholas married William Hartman on October 18, 1862, in Vermillion County, Indiana.(34) William Hartman was born September 5, 1825, in Virginia.(35) The identity of his parents is not known with certainty, but they probably were George Hartman and his wife who lived in Wabash Township, Fountain County, Indiana in 1840.(36)
Mary Luella Hartman, a daughter of William Hartman and Elizabeth (Nicholas) Hartman, was born July 21, 1863, in Illinois.(37) Elizabeth (Nicholas) Hartman died November 23, 1866, about four years after she married William Hartman.(38). It is possible she died while giving birth to Ezra E. Hartman. Ezra was a brother of Mary Luella Hartman and he is listed as 3 years of age in the 1870 census records in the William Nicholas household.(39) Ezra E. Hartman is listed in the 1880 census for the William and Mahala Nicholas household as a grandson, age 13.(40)
William Nicholas and his wife Mahala Shute, raised Mary Luella Hartman after the death of her mother, Elizabeth (Nicholas) Hartman. The 1870 U. S. Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township, lists William Nicholas, age 61, and Mahala, age 53. Also listed in the household is Mary Luella Hartman, age 6, born in Illinois.(41) Mary Luella Hartman also is listed in the 1880 William Nicholas household.(42)
On September 28, 1882, Mary Luella Hartman married Joseph P. Gouty in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois.(43) The parents of Joseph P. Gouty were Elias and Elizabeth (Shute) Gouty.(44) Mahala (Shute) Nicholas, the wife of William Nicholas, was an older sister of Elizabeth (Shute) Gouty.
Hannah (Shute) Nicholas died January 12, 1889.(45) She was buried in the Hicks Cemetery near Perrysville, Indiana. William Nicholas died Dec. 19, 1890.(46) He also was buried in Hicks Cemetery near Perrysville, Indiana.
