Joseph P Gouty was born January 6, 1860, in Indiana.(
1) He was the son of Elias B. Gouty and Elizabeth Shute.(2) Elias B. Gouty and Elizabeth Shute were married September 1, 1853, in Indiana.(3)

On September 28, 1882, Joseph P. Gouty
married Mary Luella Hartman in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois.(4) Mary Luella Hartman was born July 21, 1863, in Illinois.(5) The parents of Mary Luella Hartman were William Hartman and Elizabeth Nicholas (Nichols, Nichlas).(6)

William Hartman and Elizabeth Nicholas were married October 19, 1862, in Vermillion County, Indiana.
(7) A William Hartman is listed in the 1860 U. S. Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township.(8) Elizabeth Nicholas was 20 years old and living in the household of her parents in 1860.(9)

Elizabeth (Nicholas) Hartman died November 23, 1866, about four years after she married William Hartman.(10) It appears that the parents of Elizabeth, William Nicholas and his wife Mahala Shute, raised Mary Luella Hartman after Elizabeth died. William Hartman, the father of Mary Luella Hartman, did not die until May 31, 1896, when he was 70 years old.(11)

Mahala Shute was an older sister of Elizabeth Shute, the wife of Elias B. Gouty. The 1870 U. S. Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township, lists William Nicholas, age 61, and Mahala, age 53. Mary Luella Hartman, age 6, born in Illinois, is listed in the William Nicholas household.(12) Mary Luella Hartman also is listed in the 1880 William Nicholas household.(13)

Joseph P. Gouty and Luella Mary Hartman were the parents of six children:(14)

Rose Ann Gouty was born February 21, 1884. She married Everett Willard Remster on December 15, 1906. She died November 14, 1961.


Ezra Gouty was born January 10, 1886, and died June 26, 1957.

Robert William Gouty was born August 26, 1889, in Gessie, Vermillion County, Indiana.(15) Robert married Ethel Belle Fox on February 2, 1917.(16) He died June 4, 1949, in Lakeview Hospital, Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois, and is buried at the Lower Mound Cemetery west of Covington, Indiana.(17)

Ida Fae and Inez Mae Gouty were twins born May 17, 1897. Inez died July 29, 1977. She never married. Ida Fae Gouty died April 11, 1979. She married Dewey Saltsgaver. They did not have any children.

Leslie Roy Gouty was born August 7, 1892.

Mary Luella (Hartman) Gouty died June 23, 1938, in Foster, Warren County, Indiana.
(18) Joseph P. Gouty died October 15, 1939, in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois.(19) Both Mary Luella and Joseph P. Gouty are buried in Hopewell Cemetery west of Covington, Indiana.(20)

Joseph P. Gouty acquired a number of small farms in Warren County, Indiana. These farms were distributed to his children upon his death. The property was distributed such that each child received relatively more land if there was no house on the property.
(21) Robert William Gouty was executor of the Joseph P. Gouty estate.(22)

Joseph Gouty appears in a number of U. S. Census records for Vermillion and Warren Counties in Indiana. Joseph Gowty (i.e., Gouty) is listed in the Elias Gowty (i.e., Gouty) household in the 1860 U. S. Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township, Post Office Perrysville. He is listed as five months old (age 5/12 of a year) and his birthplace is Indiana.
(23) Joseph Gouty also appears in the Elias B. Gouty household in the 1870 U. S. Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township, Post Office Perrysville. His age at that time is given as 10.(24) Joseph Gouty also appears in the Elias Gouty household in the 1880 U. S. Census for Indiana, Vermillion County, Highland Township. His age at that time is given as 20.(25)

The 1900 U. S. Census for Indiana, Warren County, Mound Township, lists the Joseph Gouty household. Joseph Gouty is listed as 40 years old in 1900, born in January 1861 in Indiana, father born in Ohio, mother born in Indiana, race is white, and gender is male; Mary L. Gouty is listed as born in July 1863 in Illinois, father born in Indiana and mother born in Indiana; children listed are Rose A, Ezra E., Robert W., Roy L., Inez F., and Ida M. Robert is listed as age 10, born in August 1889. (26)

The 1910 U. S. Census for Indiana, Warren County, Mound Township, lists the Joseph Gouty household. Joseph Gouty is listed as 50 years old in 1910, born in Indiana, race is white, gender is male.(27)

The 1920 U. S. Census for Indiana, Warren County, Mound Township, ED #207, lists the Joseph Gouty household. Joseph Gouty is listed as 60 years old in 1920, born in Indiana, and his race is white.

i. Rose Ann, born February 21, 1884, she married Everett Washburn Remster on December 15, 1906, in Fountain County, Indiana. He was born November 9, 1907, and he died in October 1981. She died November 14, 1961. A son was Raymond Remster. He owned 25 acres of land next to the Robert William Gouty farm of 40 acres in Warren County, Indiana, according to Mavis Lorene Gouty.

Everett, born October 18, 1887, and died October 24, 1895, buried at Hopewell Cemetery, Vermillion County, Indiana

Robert William, born August 26, 1889, and died on June 4, 1949, in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois. He married Ethel Belle Fox on February 3, 1917. Buried at Lower Mound Cemetery, Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana.

Ida Fae, born May 17, 1897, in Foster, Warren County, Indiana. She married Dewey L. Saltsgaver on March 16, 1919.
v.
Inez Mae, born May 17, 1897, and died July 29, 1977, in Covington, Fountain County, Indiana. She and Ida Fae were twins. Buried at Hopewell Cemetery.
